O'Hara Competes in Basketball Classic

The Archbishop O'Hara High School basketball team entered the Consolation bracket of the Nelson Division of the Bank Midwest/William Jewell Holiday Classic after losing to Lincoln Prep 72-54 on December 27. _____ Off to a good start, the Celtics jumped to a 16-13 lead in the first quarter and partway into the second quarter, had a nine point lead at 24-15. _____ The team failed to keep pace however, and by halftime, Lincoln Prep held a three point advantage 31-28. _____ In the third quarter, the Celtics were down by only five, but in the last period, missed shots and turnovers pushed the game out of reach. _____ O'Hara's best offense was its three-point shooting, six in the first quarter alone. ______ Kyle Baker was the only O'Hara player in double figures; he had 10 points while Daniel Hurtt was held to 9. _____ _____ William Chrisman met the Celtics the next day in the semifinals of the consolation bracket, having lost to Hogan Prep 74-35, but O'Hara came up short 72-59. _____ All but three of the Celtics' points came from Daniel Hurtt (24), Rayshaun McDonald (21). and Kyle Baker (11). _______ The William Chrisman Bears poured on 25 points in the first quarter, holding the Celtics to 9 points, _____ However, by the middle of the final quarter, the Celtics trimmed to lead to nine points at 66-57 and time ran out.

O'HARA 32 WARRENSBURG 54

For the first time this season the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team lost a game by more than five points. _____ On December 20, when they played the Warrensburg Tigers, they ran short 32-54. _____ Previously O'Hara's two losses were to Smith-Cotton by three and Miege by five. _____ Having beaten Saint Pius and Clinton, the Celtics' West Central Conference standing moved to 2-2, and their overall record dropped to 4-3. _____ Only guard Rayshaun McDonald reached double figures for the home team with 13 points._____ Three three-point shots by Rayshaun McDonald, Kyle Baker, and Luke McCarville helped O'Hara to maintain a 13-13 tie at the end of the first quarter. ______ In the second quarter after the Celtics led the Tigers by a single point at 20-19, they went cold until the termination of the third quarter, very much like the third quarter of the O'Hara-Miege game. ______ In this span, only Daniel Hurtt was able to score any points for the entire O'Hara squad. _____ In the fourth quarter, the Tigers only outpointed the Celtics by one point: 11-10.

O'Hara Basketball Team Topped by Miege by Five

In the Hy-Vee Shootout on December 18, the Bishop Miege Stags (who are ranked in 5A Kansas) outscored the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics (ranked in 3A Missouri) 51-46. ______ The Celtics dominated the first two quarters and held a 16 point lead at one time. _____ The Stags had a very productive third quarter while the Celtics were unable to hold on to their lead, and the final quarter saw the two teams play evenly. _____ Daniel Hurtt had 18 points in the low scoring game and was the only O'Hara player in double figures.

O'HARA WRESTLERS WIN AGAINST SAINT PIUS 51-21

On December 14 the O'Hara wrestling team won 51-21 over the Saint Pius Warriors. _____ Among those who won were Nick Schofield, Peyton Franklin, Tanner Warner, and Miles Womack. _____ For Schofield, it was his first career win with a 9-7 decision. _____ ______ Meanwhile freshman wrestlers won three out of four JV matches. ______ _____ Ninth ranked Warrensburg was a tougher challenge for the Celtics. _____ O'Hara managed just two wins. _____ Chase Scott pinned Attison Kemp who had been ranked third in State and Jake Fortin went the distance in his 10-3 decision. _____ _____ ______ In the JV competition, Spencer Matthews, Gerard Harker, Tyler Adams, Anthony Irick, and Sly Newman were winners for O'Hara. _____ Showing a lot of heart and potential, Ian Levy, Brian Downs, Jaydon Hudson, Jai Won Choi, Devon Maschger, and Nihkil Fenani fought well but were unable to emerge victors. ______ _______The wrestling team from O'Hara is 1-1 in the West Central Conference and has an overall record of 3-1.

On December 14, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team won their game with the Clinton Cardinals by a score of 73-69. _______ The victory brings the Celtics' to 2-1 in the West Central Conference and to an overall record of 4-1. _____ They are ranked 4th among Kansas City area schools in the small class category.

Smith-Cotton Edges O'Hara 49-46

It was a matchup between Sedalia's free throws and Kyle Baker's three point shots with Smith-Cotton surviving in a low scoring basktball game 49-46 on December 13. _____ The Archbishop O'Hara High School basketball team hadn't lost to Sedalia since 2006, but a 20 for 27 free throw production gave the home team just enough for the win. _____ In the fourth quarter when the Tigers had a 45-38 advantage, Kyle Baker swished in back to back treys to bring the score to within a single point 45-44. _____ With 9.8 second on the clock, Donivan Schnicker sank two free throws, and Baker's next three-point attempt to tie up the game hit the back of the rim without scoring. ______ The Celtics went to 1-1 in West Central Conference play and the Tigers' record became 1-1. _____ O'Hara's overall record is 3-1.

CELTIC WRESTLERS ARE SECOND IN TOURNAMENT

The O'Hara Celtics wrestling team placed second at Bishop Miege on Saturday, December 10. _____ Winning their weight classes were Chase Scott, Peyton Franklin, Jake Fortin, and Maverick Griffin. _____ Ben Kirse and Tanner Warner also wrestled for the top spots but had to settle for second places. _____ Steven Conway, Jeremy Shaefer and Myles Womack completed their competitions with wins to take third places. _____ Chase Scott won all his matches by pinning his opponents. _____ Miege won the Tournament; other schools competing included Schlage, Turner, Pembroke Hill, Saint Mary's, Saint Pius X, Sherwood, and Sumner. _____ Athletic Director Alan Hull lists the following win-loss records for six Celtics with winning records: Jake Fortin 3-0, Chase Scott 8-1, Tanner Warner 7-1, Steven Conway 8-3, Maverick Griffin 7-3 and Peyton Franklin 7-3._____ ______ Meanwhile all seven wrestlers who went to Harrisonville brought home medals. _____ Tyler Adams, Spencer Mathews, Jayden Hudson, Liam Hogan and Sly Newmam all took silvers for second places. _______ Anthony Irick and Gerard Harker were bronze medalists for thirds. ____ _____ For the Varsity, JV and the freshman teams, O'Hara wrestlers won a total of sixteen medals.

O'Hara Girls are Seventh at the Kickapoo Basketball Tournament

In the first round of the Kickapoo Girls Basketball Tournament on December 8, the O'Hara Celtics trailed throughout, starting with an 18-8 first quarter and finishing the day losing 66-28. _______ Cyndee Reese had 14 of O'Hara's points. ______ As a result, they met Logan-Rogersville in their next game and lost 48-37. ______ However, O'Hara topped Lebanon 57-54 on December 10 for seventh place._____ Three Celtics reached double figures; Cyndee Reese 15, Alexa Williams 17, and Amanda Hull 14.

As of December 8, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys baskeball team was ranked #3 among small-class area teams by members of the KC Star's high school sports staff. _____ With their early 3-0 record, the Celtics were ranked ahead of Hogan Prep and Saint James Academy but behind Sumner Academy and Basehor-Linwood.

VARSITY WRESTLERS COMPETE AT GRAIN VALLEY

The Archbishop O'Hara High School varsity wrestling team had a solid showing Saturday December 3 at the Grain Valley Invitational. _____ With only seven wrestlers competing, the squad finished eighth. _____ Chase Scott led the team with a third place finish while Ethan Ambrose and Ben Kirse both finished fourth with good performances. _____ Maverick Griffin and Stephen Conway placed fifth. _______ Peyton Franklin wrestling up a weight class placed seventh. _____ Nick Schofield finished in eigth place.

O'Hara Freshmen In Wrestling Competition

O'Hara participated in the Freshman Blue Springs Wrestling Tournament on Saturday December 3. _____ Spencer Mathews and Tanner Warner were undefeated and won first places in their weight classes. ______ Liam Hogan, Gerard Harker, and Anthony Irick took seconds.______ There were twelve Freshman altogether from O'Hara and got some real good experience. _____ Nikhil Fenani, Devon Maschger, Sylvester Newman, Jayden Hudson, Ian Levy, and Eric Gossman all won a match.

O'HARA BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM GOES TO 3-0

Behind the 35 point scoring by Daniel Hurtt, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team won their third game of the season when they handed the Pembroke Hill Raiders an 83-73 defeat. ______ In the first half the two teams traded points with a close 30-28 showing, but the Celtics obtained a little more breathing room by outpointing their opponents 22-17 in the third quarter. ______ For the fans who wanted to see a lot of scoring, the teams combined for a total of 59 fourth quarter points before the game ended with O'Hara ahead by ten. _____ Rayshaun McDonald contributed 22 points and Kyle Baker had 17.

O'Hara Opens Wrestling Season with Two Wins

The Archbishop O'Hara High School wrestling team opened their 2011-2012 season with wins with Warsaw 45-36 and Clinton 48-27 on December first. _____ Coach Kevin Stanley reported that Devon Maschger lost a match and Nikil Fenani won by forfeit. _____ Tanner Warner won both of his matches. ______ Tyler Adams and Ethan Ambrose won both of their matches. _____ Chase Scott won two matches with pins as did did Peyton Franklin and Ben Kirse. _____ Stephen Conway and Josh Snow each won a match. _____ Maverick Griffin and Spencer Matthews went 1-1 for the day. ____ Finally, wrestling tough but losing both matches were Eric Gossman and Nick Schofield.

O'HARA BEGINS CONFERENCE BASKETBALL WITH A WIN

In a game that was scheduled to be played at Saint Pius, the Archbishop O'Hara Celtics boys basketball team won handily 70-47 in the O'Hara gym. ______ The game had to move due to electrical problems. _____ Building up a six point lead in the first quarter, the Celtics surged ahead 35-20 by halftime. _____ Nine O'Hara players scored in the runaway contest with Daniel Hurtt leading the way with 21 points. _____ Nine free throws along with three baskets gave Rayshaun McDonald 15 tallies and Kyle Baker was in double figures with 12, half of which came from two three-point shots. _____ ______ The Warriors from Saint Pius won the preceding girls game 38-29, but the lead changed hands until midway through the third quarter when the Celtis were last ahead 24-23. _____ Cydnee Reese led the O'Hara scorers with 9 followed by Alexa Williams wih 7.

O'Hara Opens Basketball Season With A Win

The Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team hosted the Renaisance Warriors on November 22 and won 82-67. ______ A trio of players accounted or the lion's share of the scoring. ______ Daniel Hurtt led the way with 29 points much of which was around the basket. ______ Kyle Baker had 25 points, 12 of which came from three-pointers in the third quarter. ______ Rayshaun McDonald not only served as playmaker and layup artist, but also put in 15 of the Celtics' points. _____ O'Hara led the entire game, but nearing the end of the first half, the Warriors had a 9-1 run to bring the contest to a close 38-36 score. _____ At halftime, the Celtics were ahead 41-36. _____ The Celtics then outscored the Warriors by ten points in the third quarter when Baker hit his four treys and McDonald added one of his own. _____ The final quarter started with a 66-51 score and both teams were held to 16 points for the rest of the game.______ Jamin Hill had 18 points and Jabbar had 11; they were the only two Warriors in double figures.

FIVE CELTICS ON ALL DISTRICT SOCCER TEAM

The Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team had five members named to the Class 1, District 14 ALL DISTRICT TEAM. _____ They were goalkeeper Jeff Best, midfielders Pat Berney & Julian Gidley, and defenders John Tyler & Nick Hanaway. _____ Ten other athletes from KC Lutheran and Barstow were also named to the All District team.

O'Hara 7 Richmond 51 in Quarterfinals

O'HARA STOPPED AT QUARTERFINALS BY RICHMOND AGAIN For the second year in a row, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics football team made it to the quarterfinals and were stopped by the Richmond Spartans. The score this year was 51-7. Last year Richmond went on to win the State Title. _____ Without the services of Ronnie Sailer, O'Hara's leading scorer with 80 points this season, the Celtics were not able to muster much offense until Jake Fortin completed a 20 yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to D. J. Griffin for their only points in the afternoon game. _____ The only first period scoring was a 34 yard pass from Kyle Caroll to Lendarius Pritchett on a fourth down play with the extra point kicked by by Trent Dial. _____ Three times the Spartens scored in the second period to bring the halftime score to 28-0. These were an 8 yard run by Jimmy Hamm, a 20 yard run by Gabe Vandiver, and another run by Jimmy Hamm for 15 yards. _____ Just befor halftime, Celtics advanced the ball from their own 22 yard line all the way as far as the 16 yard line but came up emptyhanded. _____ At the start of the third quarter, the Celtcs again advanced the ball from their own 20 as far as the 13 yard line before giving up possession on downs. In that drive D.J. Griffin ad a pass recption for 26 yards and Brett Coatney had one for 29 yards. _____ The Spartens added two third quarter touchdowns. A 14 yard pass to Luke Hook and a 29 yard pass to Jake Stafford from Kyle Carroll resulted in the game being played with a running clock. _____ The last 9 points for Richmond were on a 6 yard run by Caleb Dunwoodie and a safety caused by a bad snap. _____ Senior Julian Gidley kicked O'Hara's lone extra point of the game.

Some Random O'Hara Football Stats for this Year's Team

DID YOU KNOW: (1) In the eleven games played this year, O'Hara scored at least four touchdowns in ten of them, (2) Six O'Hara players scored more than 35 points [Ronnie Sailer 80,Brandon Dennis 72, D.J. Griffin 54, Julian Gidley 50,Jake Fortin 42, and Brett Coatney 36], (3) The team scored a total of 367 points, and (4) The team was the only West Central Conference team that did not lose two Conference games as they won the WCC Championship.

O'HARA REACHES QUARTERFINALS IN FOOTBALL

Continuing in their football game with Renaissance Academy from the previous day when play was interupted by lightning, the Archbishop O'Hara Celtics added three more touchdowns to win 27-6. _____ After the Warriors failed to generate any offense on their first possession when the game resumed, they punted with the score 7-0 in favor of the Celtics. _____ Four plays resulted in an O'Hara touchdown. ____ A pass from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis netted only six yards, but Brett Coatney ran for 17 and D. J. Griffin caught a 16 yard pass that resulted in O'Hara going up by 14-0 by half time. _____ Gabe Spencer stopped the Warriors' first drive of the third quarter by intercepting a Laron Cumming's pass at midfield. _______ After an exchange of punts, the Celtics got their third TD of the game. _____ Ronnie Sailer on two consecutive runs gained 21 and 18 yards, after which Brett Coatney scored on a 9 yard run. _______ The extra point kick was blocked but O'Hara had a 20-0 lead. _____ The Warriors held on to the ball for the next eleven plays, moving from their own 43 yard line to the 14 yard line where they turned over the ball on downs. _____ In the fourth quarter, O'Hara's drive came to an end when Jordan Beamon intercepted a pass, but Gabe Spencer came back with an interception for the Celtics. _____ O'Hara ran out of downs on the 33 yard line, but the Warriors did not keep the ball very long when Jorge Belcher intercepted. ______ On the very next play, Jake Fortin completed a pass to Brandon Dennis for a 38 yard touchdown. _____ Finally the Warriors got six points with Laron Cummings scrambling for a lenghthy 56 yard run.

O'Hara Football Game Delayed by Lightning

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtic football team squared off with Renaissance Academy Warriors on November 7 but were unable to complete the game with O'Hara leading 7-0 partway into the second quarter. _______ Lightning delayed the game for a half hour just after the Celtics scored their points at the start of the second period. _____ Then with 7:24 left to half time, lightning again interupted the contest and continued until 9:05 when the decision was made to continue the game at 6:30 PM Tuesday. _____ The game had been played with a constant rain and neither team put any points on the scogre board in the first quarter. _____ The Celtics did get as close as the 23 yard line before giving up the ball on downs, but the Warriors never got closer than the 32 yard line. ______ The only scoring of the game thus far began with a Celtic drive starting from their own 30 yard line. _____ In this drive consisting of ten plays, Brett Coatney had an 11 yard pickup and Jake Fortin completed an 18 yard pass to D.J. Griffin. ______ On a fourth down play on the 23 yard line, Jake Fortin scrambled for 15 yards and Ronnie Sailer tagged on 7 more on the followin play. _____ Jake Fortin scored the touchdown on a one-yard keeper, and Julian Gidley kicked the extra point.

O'HARA 28 LINCOLN PREP O IN FIRST POST SEASON GAME

With two first quarter touchdowns and two in the fourth quarter, the Archbishop O'Hara High School football team won their first post season game against Lincoln Prep 28-0 on November 2. _____ The Celtics scored on the first drive of the game on a rainy and windy evening. _____ During the drive Jake Fortin connected on two passes to Brandon Dennis for 20 yards and 17 yards, and the actual TD was scored on a quarterback keeper by Jake Fortin from the one yard line. ______ On Lincoln's first play from scrimmage, Jorge Belcher recovered a fumble and O'Hara was on its way to their second TD. _____ Ronnie Sailer took the ball in on a 30 yard run and Julian Gidley's extra point made the score 14-0. ______ Gidley would add two more extra points later in the contest. _____ Although neither team scored up to half time, the Celtics did advance the ball to the 18 yard line and to the 14 yard line, but in both occasions gave up the ball on downs. _____ As the rain continued throughout the third quarter, the two teams found themselves running the ball, fumbling, and punting with no points to show for it. _____ Near the end of the third quarter, deep in their own territory, Lincoln decided to attempt a pass, but Brandon Dennis alertly intercepted and returned the ball 18 yards for a touchdown. _____ Well into the fourth quarter, the Celtics cashed in on their final TD, _____ Gabe Spencer almost carried the ball into the endzone on a 22 yard run, and on the following play plunged over for the score.

O'Hara Soccer Team Win First Post Season Game

On November 1, the Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team won their first round Class 1 District 14 game with Lutheran 3-0. ______ Jeff Best got the shutout while Pat Berney scored two goals along with one by Julian Gidley. _______ However, the Celtics were unable to win their next game with Barstow losing 2-0.

O'Hara Cross Country District Results

In the Swope Park Starlight Theatre Course, the Archbishop O'Hara High School team came in 8th among 11 schools in Class 2 District 8. _____ Senior Blake Hudon qualified for State by taking 6th place in the boys competition while senior Claire Becker was 16th in the girls race. _____ They are the only two runners who will be lost via graduation for next year's squad. _____ Personal best times were run by five Celtics: Blake Hudon 17:30, Dakota Defreece 18.50, Corbett McKinney 19:46, Thaddeus Green 20:41, and Ronald Clark 23:13. _____ The top three schools were Saint Pius, Richmond, and Pembroke Hill. ______ O'Hara beat out Barstow, Summit Christian Academy, and Bishop LeBlond.

CELTICS ARE DISTRICT FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS

Scoring 55 points while holding the Central Blue Eagles to 6, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics won their Class 3 District on October 27. _____ The O'Hara team gave up a touchdown on the first kickoff of the game on an 89 yard return by Toiyonte Hunt but more than made up for it by scoring three times in the first quarter and four times in he second. ______ Their first six points came on a quarterback sneak by Jake Fortin following in the wake of two long pass completions, a 39 yarder from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis and a 33 yard gain to D.J. Griffin. ______ Ronnie Sailer scored O'Hara' next two touchdowns within the first quarter, the first one on an 11 yard run and the second on a pass reception from Jake Fortin for 30 yards. _____ Setting up O'Hara's first score in the second quarter, Peyton Franklin recovered a fumble on Central's 20 yard line, and Gabe Spencer brought the ball into the endzone on a running play. _____ A bit later, Brandon Dennis hauled in a pass from Jake Fortin for a 37 yard score. _____ O'Hara's next scoring was by Tanner Hull who brought the ball down to the one yard line on a 40 yard run and on the following play plunged across for the points. _____ Brett Coatney intercepted a pass to provide good field position for the Celtics, and D.J. Griffin scored a TD on a 22 yard pass. _____ At halftime, the score was 48-6 and the second half was played with a running clock. _____ The only scoring in the second half was a 6 yard run by Gabe Spencer on the last play of the third quarter. Julian Gidley connected on 7 out of 8 attempts for the extra points in the game.

CELTICS ARE DISTRICT VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS

The Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team beat Pembroke Hill on October 26 to capture the MSHSAA Class 3 District 13 Volleyball Championship! _____ The scores were 25-20 and 25-21. _____ The following Athletes were named to the All District First Team: Madison Clark (outside hitter), Amanda Hull (outside hitter), McKenzie Roberts (outside hitter), and Katie Tyler (setter). _____ Making the Second Team were Tricia Wankum (middle hitter) and Annie Mahlberg (libero). ______ Two players that received Honorable Mentions were Gabriella Rizzi and Peyton Podschwit. _____ _____ O'Hara went on to meet Saint Pius X on October 29 at 4:30 at Sectionals in Grain Valley, losing 25-21 and 25-21 in the first round. _______ None of this year's team members will be lost via graduation for next year's squad.

O'Hara Soccer Team Wins Its Sixth Game

On October 25, the Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team won a West Central Conference shutout game 2-0 with Center. ______ Jeff West was the Celtic goalkeeper. _____ The two O'Hara goals were kicked by Kevin Henderson and Anthony Scassalletti. ____ O'Hara's overall record improved to 6-12 while Center went to 5-13.______ As O'Hara goes into District competition on November 1, they realize that eight of their losses were each by just one goal.

Celtics Play for District Championship in Volleyball

The Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team will play Pembroke Hill for the Class 3, District 13 District Campionship. ____ The Celtics won their semifinal game with Lincoln Prep 25-13 and 25-8 while Pembroke Hill won over Center 25-8 and 25-11 on October 25. ____ The O'Hara team beat Southwest 25-6 and 25-4 on October 24. ____ The other teams in the first round of District had the following results: Center defeated Cristo Rey 25-14 and 25-17 while Lincoln Prep was a winner with Central 25-13 and 25-21.

THREE CELTICS MAKE ALL-CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM IN VOLLEYBALL

Even without seniors on the Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team, three Celtics won First Team All West Central Conference Honors. _____ O'Hara took both outside hitters places and the lone setter selection. ______ Junior Madison Clark and sophomore McKenzie Roberts were the outside hitters and freshman Katie Tyler was the setter. ______ Saint Pius won the West Central Conference title and had four on the First Team. _____ Trisha Wamkum was selected to the Second Team All Conference. _____ Libero Annie Mahlberg and outside hitter Amanda Hull were Honorable Mention.

Blake Hudon Sixth in WWC Cross Country Meet

Named to the Second Team All West Central Conference, Blake Hudon from Archbishop O'Hara High School had a personal best time of 17:34 on October 18. ______ He won the medal for sixth place. _______ Corbett McKinney completed the course in 26th place with his own personal best time of 20:01. _____ The rest of the Celtic team were Dakota Defreece (28th), Thaddeus Green (31st), and Jeremy Ambrose (32nd). ______ Claire Becker had O'Hara's best showing in the girls race coming in 14th. _____ _____ _____ On October 22, at the Saint Mary's II Invitational held at LaBenite Park, three O'Hara cross country runners won medals. _____ Taking 8th place in the girls competition was Katelyn Gutteridge (timed at 23:29), and in the boys division, Dakota Defreece was 19th (20:13) and Corbett McKinney was 23rd (20:41). _____ Running his best time of 21:55 was Thaddeus Green finishing in 27th place.

McCracken, Myers: 200 Yard Freestyle by Sam Bogert, 7 seconds; Jacob Kamradt, 10 seconds; 200 Yard IM Nick McCracken, 16 seconds. _______ Brian Mahan came in first in his heat for the 50Yard Freestyle. ______ In the 100 Yard Butterfly, Nick McCracken, 7 seconds; in the 100 Yard Freestyle Nate Bertrand, 5 seconds and Chris Scott, 1 second; in the 500 Yard Freestyle A.J. O'HARA WINS DISTRICT FOOTBALL GAME

The Archbishop O'Hara High School football team opened District play on October 14 with a 37-21 win. _____ The Pembroke Hill Raiders trailed throughout the contest but kept the score close until the fourth quarter when the Celtics had two unanswered touchdowns. ______ The game's first scoring was in the first quarter on a fourth down play on a pass from the 20 yard line to Brandon Dennis from Jake Fortin. ______ A long pass play to D.J. Griffin brought the ball to the one-yard line at the start of the second quarter, but the Raiders kept the O'Hara team out of the endzone on three plays. ______ Julian Gidley, who kicked four of the five O'Hara extra points in the game, connected on a 21 yard field goal to increase the Celtic lead to 10-0. ______ Then the Raiders gambled on a fourth down situation around midfield and came up short. _______ It took just one long pass play for the Celtics to bring the score to 16-0, a pass play from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis. _______ Patrick Freitag put the Raiders on the scoreboard by breaking away with a 50 yard run and Ben Gallagher passed to Charlie Mueller for a two-pointer to bring the visiting team to within eight points. _______ With less than ten seconds before halftime, the Raiders got a TD by Jak Kittoe who caught a three yard pass from Ben Gallagher. _____ However, the Raiders were not able to tie up the score with a two-point attempt for their extra point. _______ O'Hara scored first in the third quarter on a 17 yard run by Ronnie Sailer to make the score 23-14. _____Pembroke Hill answered with a five yard TD run by Patrick Freitag and again only two points separated the two teams. ______ On the very first play of the fourth quarter, Jake Fortin completed a 32 yard touchdown pass to D.J. Griffin, and near the end of the game D.J. Griffin picked up a Raider fumble and returned the ball 12 yards for the final score of the game.

Claire Becker won a medal for 27th place (timed at 23:57) and Blake Hudon with his personal best time of 17:45 won a medal for 10th place at the Helias Cross Country Invitational at Jefferson City on October 8. _____ Personal bests were run by Dakota Defreece (20:13) who came in 58th and Thaddeus Greer (22:36) who was 75th. _____ Corbett McKinney was 60th with a time of 20:30.

Final Football Standings for West Central Conference

Archbishop O'Hara High School won the West Central Conference in football with a 4-1 record with Saint Pius X coming in second with a record of 3-2. _____ All four of the other Conference teams had 2-3 records: Warrensburg, Clinton, Center, and Smith-Cotton. _____ O'Hara's only loss was to Center and Saint Pius' two losses were to O'Hara and Clinton. _____The Celtics amassed 152 points in Conference play yielding 97.

CENTER HUMBLES WEST CENTRAL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

The Center Yellowjackets surprised the West Central Conference Champions from O'Hara with a 24-6 win on October 7. ______ The O'Hara Celtics for the first time in seven games failed to score 28 or more points which would have been enough to win this game, and may be without their starting quarterback Jake Fortin who had to leave the game with an injury. _____ O'Hara's only touchdown was a 19 yard pass from freshman quarterback Michael Briggs to Brandon Dennis, but the extra point following the TD was blocked. _____Meanwhile, the Yellowjackets scored twice in the second quarter after a scoreless first quarter. _____ Center's two first half touchdowns were on a fourth down one-yard run by Anthony Eskridge and a 26 yard breakaway by Gage King. _____ The fourth quarter began with the score at 14-6 but Anthony Eskridge got the insurance TD for the Yellowjackets on a 4 yard run and before the contest was over, Kilvert Martinez converted a 38 yard field goal._____ After Fortin left the game junior Cardell Miller and freshman Michael Briggs shared the quarterbacking. ______ The only exciting play of the evening was a 96 Yard touchdown pass play from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis which was called back due to an overeager blocking penalty that was not part of the play. ______ The Celtics had won the West Central Conference two weeks prior to the game when they were undefeated and every other Conference team had two or more losses. _____ As a result, O'Hara has the Conference's best record at 4-1 while Center ended their Conference play at 2-3 along with Clinton, Warrensburg, and Smith-Cotton with identical records. ______ Saint Pius took second place in the Conference with a 3-2 Conference record.

Volleyball Team Conference Report

O'Hara has won games with Smith-Cotton (25-13; 25-23), Center (25-8; 25-3),Clinton (25-19; 22-25; 25-10), and Warrensburg (25-7; 25-23) but lost twice to Saint Pius (11-25; 16-25) and (20-25; 19-25) so far this season.

SOCCER TEAM GOES TO 3-3 IN WCC

Backed by goals from Julian Gidley, Justin Chang, and Pat Berney, the Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team evened up their West Central Conference record to 3-3 by handing Clinton a 3-1 defeat on October 4th.

Olivia Wright Qualifies for State in Golf

Shooting 99 in the Class 1 Sectional 3 Golf tournament at Shirkey Golf Course in Richmond, Olivia Wright from Archbishop O'Hara High School tied for 12th and qualified for State competition. ______ The Sectionals were played on October 5th and par for the course was 74. ______Teams that advanced to State were Pembroke Hill and Barstow._____ The State competition is in Bolivar on the 17h and 18th.

BRANDON DENNIS' THREE O'HARA FOOTBALL RECORDS

As of October 1, 2011, Brandon Dennis acquired three Archbishop O'Hara High School football records in pass receptions. ______He caught 42 passes in the six games played during this season which is the most for any Celtic for an individual season. _____ He is the top career receiver for yards gained with 1,331 yards. _____ He scored 15 career touchdowns as a receiver to top the list in that category. _____ He is in second place for yards gained in a single season and should be able to take over first place in the next game or two. He also needs one more reception to tie for first in total career receptions.

At the Raytown Swim Meet on October 5, O'Hara swimmers had the following new best times: 200 Medley relay teams: Elliott, N. McCracken, Kamradt, Bertrand improved by 21 seconds and Bogart, Lillig, A. CELTICS SCORE 33 BUT GIVE AWAY 61

In a high scoring game, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics lost a Saturday afternoon football game with the University Academy Gryphons 61-33. ______ The game was riddled with turnovers and the O'Hara defense failed to keep pace, but the team did continue to score 28 or more points in every game this season. ______ O'Hara fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter as Dimonic McKinsy scored on a line plunge and he passed to Brian Smith for a 3 yard TD. _____ O'Hara scored 14 points of their own in the second quarter, on a 35 Yard pass play from Jake Fortin to D.J. Griffin and a 2 yard run by Ronnie Sailer that came right after a 45 yard Fortin to Griffin pass. ______ But the Gryphons tallied 33 points in the second quarter to put the game well out of range. _____ These five touchdowns were: another line plunge by Dimonic McKinzy, a 27 yard pass to a wide open Bryson Winfrey, a long 63 yard bomb from McKinzy to Winfrey, a 25 yard pass from McKinzy to Brandon Bowden, and a run back with an intercepted pass by Brian Smith. _____ Halftime score was an overwhelming 47-14. _____ O'Hara scored the only third quarter touchdown. _____ It was on a 3 yard run by Ronnie Sailer and it came after an interception by Tanner Hull to stop a Gryphon drive. _____ Both teams added fourth quarter TD's. ______ Dimonic McKinzy threw two touchdown passes for Univerity Academy, a one-yarder to Kameron Gilmore and a long 49 yard strike to Bryon Winfrey. ______ O'Hara's two fourth quarter touchdowns were on a 9 yard run by Brett Coatney and a 5 yard run by backup quarterback Cardell Miller.

Two From O'Hara Qualify for Golf Sectionals

Olivia Wright and Kylee Bosworth were among the top fifteen not on the qualifying teams in girls golf that qualified to compete at Sectionals. ______ The O'Hara team took 6th place in the Class 1 District 5 District Meet held at Paradise Pointe with Pembroke Hill and Barstow qualifying as teams for Sectionals. ______ Overall, Wright was tied for 9th with a 111 score and Bosworth was 21st with 124 strokes. ______

O'HARA WINS 2-1 SOCCER GAME WITH SAINT PIUS

The two goals that Archbishop O'Hara High School had in the 2-1 win with Saint Pius X were kicked by Julian Gidley on September 26. ______ Gidley kicked his first one in the first half on a direct kick following a penalty. _______ After the Warriors tied up the Celtics, Amory Gunter dribbled the distance to the goal and passed to Gidley who got he deciding score.

Celtics Are WCC Football Champs

With O'Hara's 48-17 win with Saint Pius X and Center's 14-22 loss to Warrensburg, the Archbishop O'Hara High School football team is guaranteed FIRST PLACE in the West Central Conference. _______ With their 4-0 record, the Celtics are the only Conference team without two losses. _____ O'Hara and Center have yet to play each other. ______ The Conference standings as of September 23 are O'Hara 4-0, Saint Pius 2-2, Clinton 2-2, Warrensburg 1-2, Center 1-2, and Smith-Cotton 1-3._____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ _____ Ronnie Sailer averaged 7.2 yards per carry in the game with Saint Pius, having gained 110 yards carrying the ball 15 times. _____ Jake Fortin completed 15 passes in 21 attempts for 269 yards and four touchdowns. His total yardage via passing was fourth best in the KC area. _____ Brandon Dennis caught eight passes, two of which were for touchdowns, for a total of 117 yards. _____ Tanner Hull and Peter Briggs got O'Hara's two quarterback sacks in the game. Both players also led the team in unassisted tackles. _____ ______ _____ IN THE TOP TEN FOR O'HARA: In passing, Jake Fortin is #2 in career completions (134), yards acquired (2,361), and touchdowns (24). For the first five games played in this season, he has already reached the #4 spot for a single season performance in completions and yards gained. _____ Brandon Dennis is already O'Hara's #1 pass receiver for a single season with 37 catches and total yards, and has the #2 spot for career total yards. _____ In addition to his 85 career extra point kicks (#2), Julian Gidley took over first place in career kickoff yardage with 6,102 yards, ahead of Kevin Furey's 6067 yards set back in 1992. Gidley also is in second place for kickoffs within the 20 yard line (he has 82 just behind Furey's record of 86). _____On the defense, George Belcher with 422 points is in second place to William Lanning who had 465 back in the year 2000.

O'HARA WINS HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME 48-17

An explosive 21 point third quarter made a big difference in Archbishop O'Hara's 48-17 homecoming football win over the Saint Pius X Warriors on Septemer 23. _____ The Celtics scored the first of their seven touchdowns in their first series on a 19 yard pass play from Jake Fortin to D.J. Griffin. ______ In the five plays of the scoring drive, Griffin also hauled in a pass for a 26 yard gain. _______ The Warriors tied up the score at the start of the second quarter on a 29 yard pass from Grant Gavin to Jake Hamerle. _______ The Celtics answered with a nine play drive finished off with a line plunge by Jake Fortin, and Julian Gidley's extra point kick made the score 14-7. ______ Jake Hamerle put a halt on the Celtics' next drive with an interceptions, but when O'Hara got the ball back, they drove in for their third TD. _____ Passes of 30 yards to Brandon Dennis and 26 yards to Brett Coatney were followed by a touchdown catch of 8 yards by Brandon Dennis. ______ The extra point was blocked but the Celtics were up 20-7. ______ Saint Pius attempted to get points before halftime and had to settle for a 27 yard field goal by L.J. Lipari with one second on the clock and a score of 20-10 at the break. ________ O'Hara went to work right away in the third quarter with Ronnie Sailer breaking away for a 56 yard TD. _______ Brett Coatney took a 22 yard pass from Jake Fortin for the next six-pointer. ______ After the Warriors failed on a fourth down gamble, O'Hara'w third touchdown came from a 9 yard quarterback keeper by Jake Fortin. ________ At the beginning of the fourth quarter Saint Pius declined punting and gave up the ball on incompleted passes providing good field position for the Celtics to put their last TD on the scoreboard. _______ This came on a 25 yard pass to Brandon Dennis from Jake Fortin. ______With the score at 48-10, the game was played with a running clock until the Warriors were able to add any points. _______ The Warriors got their final points of the game on a 6 yard pass completion from Grant Gavin to David Kepus.

Celtics Rally to Volleyball Win

After taking the first game 25-19 with the Warrensburg Tigers, the O'Hara volleyball team was edged out 25-22 to force a third encounter. ______ The young squad came through with a strong finish 25-10 to move up in the West Central Conference.

O'HARA WINS A O-O SOCCER GAME

When the time elapsed between the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics soccer team and the Smith-Cotton Tigers, neither team produced a goal. ______ In the shootout, the Celtics converted on three out of five shots while the Tigers came up with only two. _____ Pat Berney, Julian Gidley, and John Allen were successful giving goalie Jeff Best credit for the shutout.

FOUR CELTICS ALEADY IN FOOTBALL TOP TEN

The undefeated Archbishop O'Hara High School football team, just four games into the 2011 season, has four players among the school's top ten records. ______ _____ Quarterback JAKE FORTIN moved into second place in career total yards gained by passing (2,092)and third place in total number of completed passes (119). _____ T.J. White has the school record of 4,587 yards on 240 completions and Joe Holder is in second in completions with 126. _____ Last year Fortin reached fifth place for a single season with 1,092 yards on 66 completions, and already has moved into the sixth place slot in just four games with 978 yards on 52 passes. _____ _____ BRANDON DENNIS vaulted into second place in career pass receptions attaining 1,166 yards on 54 catches. _____ He is closing in on Joe Pepple's school record of 1,259 yards on 68 receptions. _____ Last year Dennis caught 25 passes for 556 yards and this year has surpassed that mark with 29 receptions for 610 yards coming in fourth best for an individual season. ______ _____ JULIAN GIDLEY added six extra point conversions to his total in the 42-35 victory with Smith-Cotton and holds the second place career record with 79. _____ He reached this level in 25 games, whereas Bryce Scovil who is in first place, has 128 in 41 games. _______ _____ Finally GEORGE BELCHER moved up to third place on career defensive points amassing 404 points. ______ These points are awarded for various defensive stats involving tackles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, quarterback sacks, and blocked kicks. _____ William Lambing is O'Hara's career leader in this category with 465 total points followed by Derek Willis with 413 points.

Competing with an unusually young team, Archbishop O'Hara High School's head coach Jenny Nurrenbern has the Celtics volleyball team tied for third place with Smith-Cotton with 1-1 records early in the season. _____ O'Hara was successful in their 25-13 and 25-23 with the Tigers from Sedalia, but earlier in the year they lost to Saint Pius X 17-25 and 16-25. ______ There are no seniors on the O'Hara varsity and only three players are from the junior class: Tricia Wankum, Madison Clark, and Annie Mahlberg. ______ Except for freshmen Peyton Podschwit and Katie Tyler, the remaining athletes are sophomores: Amanda Hull, Gabriella Rizzi, and McKenzie Roberts. _____ Saint Pius X with two wins and Warrensburg with one win are the only two schools undefeated at this time. _____Clinton has lost twice and Center has lost once and both teams are looking toward their first win of the year.

Football Score: O'Hara 42 Smith-Cotton 35

Quarterback Jake Fortin scored the deciding touchdown with 24 seconds left in the game between the O'Hara Celtics and the Smith-Cotton Tigers on September 16. _____ All eleven touchdowns in the game were followed by successful kicked extra points, six by Julian Gidley for the victorious O'Hara team and five by Timmy Lor for the Tigers. ______ The final score was O'Hara 42 and Smith-Cotton 35, and both teams had led at various stages of the game. _____ The Tigers held the ball for every offensive play throughout the first quarter except one, but that one was an 87 yard TD run by Ronnie Sailer and gave the Celtics a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter. _____ O'Hara nearly had another six points when D. J. Griffin interepted Connor Moriarity's pass and returned the ball to the endzone; however it was nullified by a penalty. _____ The Tigers tied and then took the lead in the second quarter on two one-yard TD's by Darian Weeks and Connor Morierity. _____ The Tigers appeared to be knocking at the door for a third touchdown when they advanced the ball to the 10 yard line with 1:23 remaining in the first half. _____ Brandon Dennis intercepted to stop the drive and the Celtics reached the goal at the other end of the field on three nifty consecutive pass plays. _____ Jake Fortin completed passes to D. J. Griffin for 15 yards, to Brandon Dennis for 26 yards, and a touchdown pass to Brett Coatney covering 44 yards. ______ Halftime score was 14-14. _____ The Celtics regained their lead in their first series of the third quarter. _____ Aided by a 40 yard pass completion to Brandon Dennis and a 28 yard run by Ronnie Sailer, O'Hara got the touchdown on a 12 yard run by Ronnie Sailer. ______ The Tigers then tied the score at 21-21 when Josh Hesseltime scored on an 11 yard run. _____ A while later, the visitors jumped ahead of the Celtics with a 68 yard pass play from Connor Moriarty to Shae Buckner. ______ This lead was short lived inasmuch as Jake Fortin was able to loft a pass to Brandon Dennis for an 80 yard strike. _____ The two teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 28-28. _____ In the final quarter, the Tigers struck first with Shae Buckner gathering in a 29 yard pass from Connor Moriarty. _______ To knot the game at 35-35, the Celtics called upon D. J. Griffin to haul in a long pass from Jake Fortin, a play covering 55 yards. ______ The Tigers played ball control in their next series and managed to approach the 18 yard line before yielding the ball on downs. ______ Although a fairly long way to go, the Celtics methodically advanced the ball in relatively small increments to the 2 yard line where Jake Fortin was able to score. ______ The final 24 seconds were taken up by four incomplete pass attempts by the Tigers. ______ Jake Fortin completed 11 passes in 16 attempts for 310 total yards and Brandon Dennis caught six for 181 total yards. ____ These were among the area's best for the weekend.

SOME CROSS COUNTRY UPDATES

Six cross country runners from Archbishop O'Hara High School registered their personal bests at the recent Platte County Meet. ______ The runners along with their times are Blake Hudon (17:50), Corbett McKinney (20:06), Jeremy Ambrose (22:54), Thaddeus Green (23:08), Ronald Clark (23:20), and Katelyn Gutteridge (23:46). ______ Blake Hudon took a medal for 18th place; in the previous Meet hald at Oak Grove, Blake won the 8th place medal.

UNDEFEATED O'HARA LEADS IN WCC FOOTBALL

On September 9, the Archbishop O'Hara High School football team took sole possession of first place in the WEST CENTRAL CONFERENCE when they won their game with Warrensburg while Saint Pius X lost an overtime contest with Clinton. _____ The Celtics' 2-0 Conference record places them ahead of second place Saint Pius X whose record became 2-1. _____ Tied for third place with 1-1 records are Clinton and Smith-Cotton. ______ Yet to win a Conference game are Center (0-1) and Warrensburg (0-2). _______ ________ _________Ronnie Sailer became the Celtics' leading scorer with 26 points on four touchdowns and a two-point conversion. _____ Brandon Dennis has 18 points on three touchdowns and is followed by Julian Gidley with 14 points on eleven extra points and a field goal. ______D. J. Griffin and Brett Coatney each scored two touchdowns and Jake Fortin and Tanner Hull each have one. _____ _____ ______ On September 12th, the underclassmen played in a rather novel arrangement. _____ The two frehman squads played for the first two quarters and the JY teams played for the third and fourth quarters. ______ The Celtics won the combined contest 27-14.

O'Hara Celtics 28 Warrensburg Tigers 7

The Archbishop O'Hara High School football team trailed the Warrensburg Tigers until there were six minutes remaining in the third quarter, and then went on to post a 28-7 victory on September 9. ______ The Tigers scored on their first possession with a 94 yard scoring drive._____ The touchdown was on a 25 yard pass from Sam White to T. J. Cutler and Ram Hoyer added the extra point. ______ The Tigers did not score again in the game, but had a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter._______ The Celtics got six points on a two yard run by Ronnie Sailer in the second quarter, the big play in the drive was a 32 yard gain on a Jake Fortin to D. J. Griffin pass. _____ A bad snap prevented an extra point kick and the Celtics were down 7-6. _____ Just before the half, the Celtics appeared to get a touchdown with 45 seconds remaining in the second quarter, but a catch by Brandon Dennis in the corner of the end zone was ruled incomplete. _____ Julian Gidley tried a field goal with 25 seconds left to the half, but it went wide to the right. _____ In the third quarter, the turning point of the game was an interception by D. J. Griffin along with a return for 46 yards! _____ Six plays later, Brett Coatney caught an eight yard pass for a touchdown for O'Hara's first lead of the game at 12-7. ______ Ronnie Sailer was able to run for a 2 point conversion and bring the score to 14-7 by the end of the quarter. _____ In the final quarter, the Tigers gambled on a fourth down at midfield but had to give up the ball on downs. ______ O'Hara marched down to the 21 yard line where Ronnie Sailer broke through to boost the O'Hara advantage to 21-7. _____ A successful on-side kick returned the ball to the Celtics and set up a drive for the last points of the contest. _____ Having field position at the 34 yard line, the offense used eight plays to reach pay dirt. _____A 21 yard pass completion from Jake Fortin to Tanner Hull kept the drive alive as well as a fourth down short run by Jake Fortin. ______Ronnie Sailer ran in from one yard away for the TD. _____ The Tigers tried to get something going via passing but gave up the ball on incomplete tosses. ______ O'Hara cranked out yards all the way down to the one yard line and then let the time run out.

O'HARA OPENS CROSS COUNTRY SEASON

On Saturday, September 3, the Archbishop O'Hara High School cross country team opened their season at the Saint Mary's Invitational. _____ The meet consisted of three races, one for boys, one for girls, and a first year run. _____ In the boys division, the Celtics were 10th of 12 teams and Blake Hudon was O'Hara's only medalist finishing in fifth place. _____ The four others making up the team were Dakota Defreece, Corbett McKinney, Thaddeus Green, and Ronald Clark. _____ O'Hara did not field a complete team in the girls division but had two medalists in Claire Becker (13th) and Katelyn Gutteridge (29th). _____ In the race for first year runners, O'Hara had four who earned medals. ______ J. D. Meyer was 4th, Aidan Eckart came in 8th, Sean Christianson was 10th, and Jeremy Ambrose finished 13th.

O'Hara Takes a 28-14 Football Win Over Clinton

O'Hara pass receiver Brandon Dennis scored three of the Celtics' touchdowns along the way to a 28-14 West Central Conference win at Clinton on September 2nd. _____ Tanner Hull accounted for O'Hara's final TD and Julian Gidley provided all four extra points. _____ A 42 yard pass play from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis put O'Hara ahead 7-0 in the first quarter. _____ In the second period, Fortin connected with Brandon Dennis for a 74 yard TD and a 14-0 halftime advantage. ______ The Clinton Cardinals, relying mostly on their running game, kept a drive alive in the third quarter to eventuallyscore on a 3 yard run by quarterback Chris Sidfrid; Gabe Suthoff's extra point was good to bring the score to 14-7 to start the fourth quarter. _____ With six minutes remaining in the game, Brandon Dennis made an oustanding catch in the endzone giving the Celtics some breathing room with a score of 21-7. _____ Adding to that with less than a full minute left in the game, Tanner Hull scored on a 1 yard run. ______ But the game did not end at 28-7. Following a kickoff that went out of bounds, Tanner Perry carried for the cardinals 65 yards as the clock ran out of time and the home team got their second TD. _____ Gabe Suthoff had 107 yards rushing for Clinton and Ronnie Sailer had 105 yards for the Celtics. _____ Jake Fortin had 12 completions, ten of which were to Brandon Dennis. _____ With his three receptions in this game, Brandon Dennis is in 4th place among O'Hara receivers, one catch behind Danny Hernandez. ____Jake Fortin passed for 212 yards in this contest. _____ Chris Sidfrid wasn't so successful for the Cardinals completing one pass in four attempts and was intercepted twice (by jorge Belcher and Ronnie Sailer). ______ In O'Hara's two games this season, they haven't given up any points in the second quarter. _____ _____ ______ On Monday, the O'Hara JV, with Cardell Miller quarterbacking, beat the Cardinals 32-14. _______ The game was played as a part of a doubleheader following the O'Hara freshman team's 19-14 win against Oak Grove. ______ It was the freshman squad's second game of the season having lost a close 21-20 game with Saint Thomas Aquinas earlier in the young season.

FORTIN QUARTERBACKS INTO LEADER LIST

As of the 38-14 football win with Grandview, Jake Fortin made his mark among the leading passers at Archbishop O'Hara High School. _____ He completed 18 in the game; T.J. White had held the O'Hara record with 17 since 2007. _____ Fortin matched Ryan McNamara for the most passes attempted in a game with 32; Ryan had set the record in 1998. _____ As for yards gained via passing in a single game, Fortin had 280 yards for third place (T. J. White had two games with 287 and 288 yards in 2008). _____ In the category of most yards per attempt in a game, Fortin moved into fourth place with a 10 yards per attempt. Only T. J. White, Jesse Thomas, and Kyle O'Neill topped him. _____ _____ _____ Jake Fortin's successes are reflective of the outstanding pass receiving of Brandon Dennis who also moved among O'Hara's top performers. _____ He caught 11 passes in the Grandview game to lead in most pass receptions in an individual game (the previous high was 9 by Matt Morrison in 1998). _____ Dennis already holds the record of 192 yards for most yards in a game established last year. In the Grandview game he also took over second place with 187 yards. _____

O'Hara Soccer Team Opens Season with 2-1 Victory

Colton Ludwig, a forward on the Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team, provided the offensive scoring in the Celtics' 2-1 win with the Belton Pirates to open their season on August 29. _____ With an assist from Kevin Henderson, Ludwig gave the O'Hara team a 1-0 halftime advantage. ______ Belton tied the score at 1-1 getting a shot past goalie Jeff Best, but the Celtic defense wouldn't allow any further damage. ____ The deep defensive play of Nick Hanaway and John Tyler kept the ball away while not to be forgotten was the duo Jason Jarquio and Anthony Scassaletti who made sure the opponents remained midfield at best. _____ Connor Burke was fouled near the goal drawing a penalty kick and Colton Ludwig kicked in the winning goal.

GIDLEY MOVES UP IN KICKING STATS

With his five extra points kicked in Archbishop O'Hara High School's 38-14 football win over Grandview, senior Julian Gidley reached 62 to place him third in the Celtics' all time most extra points made by kicking. _____ Bryce Scovill (2005-2008) has the O'Hara record with 128 and Kevin Furey (1990-1992) is second with 72. ______ Prior to Friday's game Gidley was tied at 57 with Joe Palmer (1996-1998).

O'Hara Opens Football Season With 38-14 Win

The Grandview Bulldogs fell to the O'Hara Celtics football team 38-14 on August 26. _____ While the Bulldogs had to settle for two one-yard plunges in the first and fourth quarters by Jaavon Turner, the Celtics came through with five touchdowns and a field goal. _____ D. J. Griffin opened the scoring on a defensive touchdown, intrecepting Ryan Lee and running the ball in from the 30 yard line. _____ Julian Gidley added on the extra point and would go on to kick four more along with the game's only field goal. _____ Ronnie Sailer scored on O'Hara's first offensive series on an 8 yard run. ______ With O'Hara ahead 14-0, the Bulldogs sustained an 80 yard drive for their first TD, but it was their last successful series until well into the fourth quarter.______ Both teams struggled throughout the second quarter until Gidley came through with a 25 yard field goal with 9 second left to the half. _____ The Celtics then scored 21 points in the third quarter to widen the score to 38-7. _____ Quarterback Jake Fortin was the first to enter the endzone in the second half of play. _____ It was on a one-yard line plunge which had been set up by a 29 yard spectacular catch by Brandon Dennis that kept the drive alive. _____ O'Hara's next six-pointer was from Jake Fortin's pass to D. J. Griffin for a 39 yard score. _____ Before the third quarter came to a close, Brett Coatney scored on a nine yard run. ______ Coach Jim DeMarea was able to play a good number of underclassmen in the fourth quarter.

O'HARA WINS THREE IN FOOTBALL JAMBOREE

The Archbishop O'Hara High School football team won 12-0, 12-0, and 18-12 in their three jamboree games with Ruskin,University Academy, and Pleasant Hill on August 19. _____ Each team was given twelve offensive and twelve defensive plays for each series starting at the 40 yard line, with no kickoffs, punts, nor extra point attempts. _____ _____ On the Celtics' first offensive series with the Ruskin Eagles, they scored in five plays. _____ Jake Fortin completed a short 6 yard pass to D. J. Griffin for the six points; earlier the duo connected for a 20 yard gain. _____ Their second TD was set up by another Fortin-Griffin pass that advanced the ball to the 7 yard line and Ronnie Sailer scored the touchdown a bit later from the two yard line. _____ On O'Hara's twelfth play, Fortin completed a 30 yard pass to Brandon Dennis but was short of a third TD. _____ The O'Hara defense kept the Eagles from getting to the endzone; the furthest they could advance was to the 24 yard line. _____ _____ O'Hara didn't score against the University Academy Gryphons until their 8th offensive play. _____ Jorge Belcher took it in from ten yards out. _____ Two plays later, Brandon Dennis scored on a 35 yard pass play from Jake Fortin. _____ Four incompleted passes along with a quarterback sack by the Celtic defense kept the Gryphons from reaching the goal although they did manage to come as close as the 3 yard line at one time. _____ ______ The three O'Hara touchdowns scored against the Pleasant Hill Roosters were on a hook-snd-ladder play covering 18 yards, a long run of 25 yards by Ronnie Sailer, and a long pass from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis for 38 yards._____ The hook-and-ladder play was a pass from quarterback Jake Fortin to left end Brandon Dennis who immediately lateraled to Gabe Spencer who completed the play. ____ The Rooster team got their two six-pointers on a long pass for 33 yards and a one yard line plunge on a fourth down play.

University Academy, Ruskin, and Pleasant Hill will participate in the 2011 football jamboree with Archbishop O'Hara High School at Ruskin Football Field on August 19 starting at 6:00 PM. _____ O'Hara plays the Ruskin Eagles first, then the University Academy Gryphons, and end with the Pleasant Hill Roosters. ______ Each team gets 12 offensive and 12 defensive plays against each opponent.

O'HARA 2011 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE

After the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics compete in the August 19 Football Jamboree, they will begin their regular season hosting Grandview on August 26. _____ This will be followed by two away West Central Conference games, September 2 at Clinton and September 9 at Warrensburg. _____ Two more WCC games will be home games against Smith-Cotton on September 16 and Saint Pius X on September 23. _____ On September 30 the Celtics visit University Academy. ______ Home games will be played with Center on October 7 and Pembroke Hill on October 14. _______ No game is scheduled for October 21 but O'Hara will meet Central Senior on October 27. _____ All games have a starting time of 7:00 PM.

Cyndee Reese Makes First Team All-Metro

Cyndee Reese, A sophomore from Archbishop O'Hara High School, was name to the FIRST TEAM ALL-METRO in track and field for her success in the discus. _____ Competing with the top juniors and seniors of the area, she won the Missouri Class 3 State Title with a 134-8 effort. ______ Her throw of 122-3.5 was the best at Sectionals, and her personal best of 134-9 won the District. _____ Among her achievements was a sixth place in the Kansas Relays when she had a 132-6 toss earlier in the year.

RAPHAEL SPENCER NAMED MVP IN MO-KAN GAME

The Missouri All Stars won the MO-KAN game 21-13 over the Kansas All Stars at Southwick Stadium Complex on June 16th, and Raphael Spencer was named the game's most valuable player. ______ The Archbishop O'Hara High School running back was part of the reason the Celtics went to this year's football quarterfinals and he had an outstanding day in the All-Star contest. _____ Spencer broke free for a 71 yard touchdown run from scrimmage that put the Missouri team ahead by two touchdowns in the second quarter. ______ In the final quarter when only eight points separated the two teams, Spencer was called upon to help run out the clock and keep the ball out of the Kansas players' hands. ______ He carried out his mission with four carries eating up thirty valuable yards. _____ The Missouri team was able to convert three times in a row on third and short situations and Spencer came through on two of them. _____ The defenses for both teams played well and whereas the Kansas defense did give up three TD's, the Missouri defense held their opponents to one touchdown and two field goals.

In the 2011 Archbishop O'Hara High School Golf Tournament held at Drumm Farm Golf Club on June 10,the following were winners. _____ In A Flight, 1st place team of Bill Foley '70, Jack Foley '70, Leroy Rottinghaus, and Neil Parker. _____ In A Flight, 2nd place team of Ed Ismert '87, John Paul Ismert, Victor Carr, and Tom Davis. _____ In B Flight, 1st place team of Mark Wernsman '93, Jay Rapley, Bryan Snyder, and Brad Newkirk. _____ In B Flight, 2nd place team of Craig Cummings, Mark Gurley, Chuck Ramsey, and Harry Payne. _____ In C Flight, 1st place team of Tom Holder '80, Mike Surprise '80, and Sean McCaffrey. ______ In C Flight, 2nd place team of John O'Connor '88, Terry Downs, George Peter, and Allie Donahue. _____ In the following four categories, Ed Nichols had the longest putt on hole #10, Mark Madsen had the longest drive on hole #12, James Corless '75 was closest to the pin on hole #14, and Stacy Crusinbery was closest to the pin on #3. _______ In the Rita Monteil Challenge, 1st place was earned by Christopher Korth, 2nd place by Jon Fugitt, 3rd place by Shane Stufflebean, and 4th place by Rusty Murray '75.

Cyndee Reese is STATE CHAMPION in discus

Cydnee Reese from Archbishop O'Hara High School won the girls' Championship in the discus at the Missouri State Track Meet! _____ Her 134'8" effort was four feet better than the second place toss. ______ _______ Dakota Waggerman won All State Honors also by reaching 8th place in girls' pole vaulting. ______ Tanner Hull in boys' pole vaulting and Jasper Greeson in boys' 400 meter just missed, both coming in 9th in their events. ______ Skyler Young was unable to get to the finals in shotput and was 10th in the event._____ Her best throw was 34'9".

CLINTON OUTLASTS CELTICS IN SECTIONAL BASEBALL GAME 2-1

The Clinton Cardinals won the Sectional baseball game with the O'Hara Celtics 2-1 pushing across an extra inning run after an evening pitchers' duel. _____ O'Hara scored their only run in the first inning by loading the bases with no outs, but managed the lone tally on an RBI fielder's choice. _____ The Cardinals tied the game with a walk and two singles and that was the only scoring until the eighth inning. _____ In the fifth inning, O'Hara again loaded the bases with no outs but came up empty-handed. _____ In five of the eight innings the Celtics left a runner stranded on third base as the offense could not come up with clutch hits. _____ Jake Slocum and Logan Halil pitched well for the Celtics but Tayler Ross and Tylor Hankins did the same for the Cardinals. _____ Slocum and Halil had nine strike outs between them. _____ Cullen Rowland had the defensive play of the day when he dove for and caught a tricky pop up for a third out when there were runners on second and third. _____

Defender Lindsay Beachner, Mid-fielder Mary Pat Brage, Forward Andi Davis, and Midfielder/Forward Sydney White from Arhbishop O'Hara High School's runner-up District soccer team were named to the First Team All-District. _____ Goalkeeper Derrianna White and Midfielder/Forward Katie Brage made the Second Team All-District.

FIVE CELTICS QUALIFY FOR STATE IN TRACK

Every O'Hara athlete that qualified from the Track District and went on to the Sectionals advanced on Saturday May 21 to compete in the State Meet! _______ The five were Cydnee Reese (discus), Skyler Young (shotput), Jasper Greeson (400 meters), Tanner Hull (pole vault), and Dakota Waggerman (pole vault)._____ Reese was First in her event with a throw of 122'3.5". _____ Greeson and Hull took third places and Young and Waggerman had fourths. _____ The State Meet is scheduled for May 28 & 29 in Jefferson City.

O'Hara Beats Oak Grove For District Baseball Championship

On May 18, the Archbishop O'Hara High School baseball team won a close 4-3 game with Oak Grove for the Class 3 District 14 Championship. _____ Logan Halil pitched for the winning Celtics striking out eight in the game. _____ O'Hara came from behind scoring two runs in their half of the last inning. _______ The key hit was a triple by Cullen Rowland. _____ Ben Janet was three for four at bat and Caleb Schmitt made a diving catch to end the game with the tying run on base. _____ Coach William Mayle commented, "Our team went up in the third inning with two outs and a triple by Ben Janet. This was followed up by another triple by Caleb Schmitt. Moments later Caleb stole home to put the Celtics up 2-0." _____ In the fourth inning, a two run homer tied up the game. Oak Grove added a run in the fifth to take the lead. _____ "The magic started in the seventh inning," Coach Mayle said, "after two outs, Cullen Rowland hit his triple over the left fielder's head scoring Jacob Chichuk. Ben Janet came up huge with the game winning hit and RBI." _____ "Logan Halil Pitched through seven complete innings registering eight strike outs and issuing no walks. Jack Caywood from Achbishop O'Hara High School had an individual score of 172 strokes at the State Class 3 Golf Tournament. _______ After a first round of 90, he rallied for an 82 to finish 59th in the State among 91 participants. ____ The competition was at Silo Ridge Golf Course in Bolivar, Missouri.

Eagle Owl Award won by O'Hara Alum

Caitlin Vorbeck, who graduated from Archbishop O'Hara High School in 2007, was the recipient of the Eagle Owl Award at Jacksonville State for her excellence in volleyball and academics. _______ This award which was established in 1994 is given to an athlete who excels not only in her sport, but is also a positive role model for others. ______Caitlin was an outside hitter and middle blocker for the Gamecock volleyball team.___ She was a First Team All-Ohio Valley Conference selection for the second year in a row. ____ She led the team and was ranked #6 in kills per set. _____ With a GPA of 3.28 in her nursing program, she was a leader in seeing her team to the NCAA Tournament. _____ In the first round, the team beat Flordida A&M. _____She had 10 career double-doubles and is fourth all-time in kills with 1,352 for her school.

With eleven varsity letters within three sports (volleyball, soccer, and basketball), Lindsey Hanaway with a 3.9 GPA was selected as the Archbishop O'Hara High School's Scholar-Athlete for 2011. _____ Runners-up were Allison Seck and Andy Meyer. _____ Lindsey was the setter for the State Champion volleyball teams and won All-State honors in the sport. ______ She is a member of the O'Hara Chapter of the National Honor Society, the Student Council, and the Peer Mentor Program.

Five Celtics Qualify for Sectional Track

In the Class 3 District 7 District competition at Oak Grove on May 14, five O'Hara track athletes qualified for Sectionals by placing among the top four of their events. _____Cyndee Reese won the girls' discus and Dakota Waggerman was the champion in pole vaulting. ______ Reese's 134'9" throw was well ahead of the second place heave of 125'. _____ Waggerman cleared 10' to the runner-up's 9'6". _____ The other three who qualified were Jasper Greeson in the 400 meter run which was good enough for a second place, Tanner Hull in the pole vault who tied for 3rd, and Skyler Young in shotput which also was a third place finish. _____ Grandview won the boys championship with the Celtics finishing 10th of 13 teams, and Lincoln Prep won the girls with the Celtics in 7th among 14 schools.

O'HARA BACCALAUREATE CEREMONY

For the 97 graduates of Archbishop O'Hara High School, the valedictorian, the salutatorian, and the Saint LaSalle awards were announced at a baccalaureate ceremony on May 13th at Saint John Francis Regis Church. _____ Erin Lynch is the school's 2011 valedictorian who gave her address at the Sunday graduation exercises om May 15. ____ Following the baccalaureate liturgy, Carson Burns gave the salutatorian address. _____ The prodigious Saint LaSalle Award went to Allison Seck and the Tyler Jones Award for dedication, spirit, and perseverence was announced to be Kyle Quirk. ______ Senior projects by Shannon Young, Natalya Washington, Alyssa McKee, MacKenzie Magwire, and Adriane Barry were recognized as projects of merit while those by Allison Seck, Josh Bonello, Halea Coulter, and Liz Loree were deemed superior projects.

Max Storms, an Archbishop O'Hara High School alumnus, was the recipient to the University of Missouri's JOE MARKS AWARD and the DERRICK PETERSON AWARD. ______ The Joe Marks Award is given to the outstanding cross country runner whose life demonstrates a commitment to excellence. _____ The Derrick Peterson Award is annually given for the most outstanding performer on the men's track and field team for achievements throughout the season. _____ Max Storms was also elected to be one of the captains for the 2011-2012 season.

O'Hara Girls Track Team are Runners-up in WCC

With top scoring by Marli Bartlett (long jump), Dakota Waggerman (pole vault), Skyler Young (shotput), and Cyndee Reese (discus), the Archbishop O'Hara girls track team were Runners-up in the West Central Conference Championships. _____ Whitney Nelson was 2nd in the high jump. ______ Finishing in third places were Arniecia Johnson in the 300 meter hurdles, Amanda Hull in the high jump, and Cydnee Reese in shotput. _____ ALSO: the girls placed in the top three in all the sprint relays. _____ In boys competition the O'Hara team came in third place. _____ Tanner Hull (pole vault and long jump) and Jasper Greeson (400 meters) were West Central Conference Champions. _______ Jasper Greeson took second place in the 200 meter dash. ______ More details are forthcoming.

O'HARA GOLF IS SIXTH IN SECTIONALS

As a team, the Archbishop O'Hara High School golfers did not qualify for the Sectional play as one of their District's top two teams, but four of the athletes did qualify to compete as individuals. ______ The foursome however came in 6th in the Class 3 Sectionals anyway when their four scores combined for 373 strokes! _____ That was a better team showing than two teams that did qualify from their Districts, namely Harrisonville 384 and Pleasant Hill 386. _____ Warrensburg, Pembroke Hill, Kearney, Excelsior Springs, and Marshall were the top five schools in the Sectional competition. _____ O'Hara's Jack Caywood who shot an 81 had the fifth best score among the top twelve outside the top two teams going on to State competition and he will compete as an individual. ______ The best individual score turned in was a 76 by Ryan Zech from Kearney.

O'Hara is Third in District Golf

At Hidden Pines Golf Course in Warrensburg, Archbishop O'Hara High School placed third in Class 3-A District Golf on April 28, just four strokes shy of Marshall. ______ Warrensburg was the District Champs with a score of 303 while Marshall finished 366 snd O'Hara 370. _____ The top two teams continue to Sectionals while other golfers can move on as individuals if their scores are high enough. _____ All four of the O'Hara athletes did indeed qualify to continue as individuals. _____ They were Jack Caywood (85), Tanner Bainbridge (89), Amere Taylor (95), and Ryan Wald (101). _____ Both Jack Caywood and Tanner Bainbridge were named to the ALL DISTRICT TEAM.

O'Hara is Second in Conference Golf

Although Warrensburg easily outdistanced the other teams in the West Central Conference Golf Tournament to take First Place on April 21, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics had the next best score to reach Second Place. _____ The Celtics with a score of 351 were seven strokes better than Third Place Smith-Cotton. _____ Saint Pius was fourth, Clinton was fifth, and Center did not field a team. _____ Jack Caywood was named to the ALL CONFERENCE FIRST TEAM while Tanner Bainbridge and Ryan Wald made the ALL CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM. _____ All three had scores in the 80's. ______ Amere Taylor was O'Hara's fourth player contributing to the team total.

Tennis Team is Victorious

The O'Hara varsity tennis team won against Sedalia Smith-Cotton on a cold day in April. _____In singles, Kyle Quirk, Joe Locascio, and Matt Shelton won as did doubles teams of Connor Burke & Brandon Dennis and Kyle Quirk & Joe Locascio.

On April 19, the O'Hara girls track team defeated Smith-Cotton and the boys team finished second. _____ Cyndee Reese won in the discus and Skyler Young in shot put for the girls. _____ Jasper Greeson won three races, the 100 meter, 200 meter, and 400 meter. _____ Tanner Hull won in pole vaulting. _____ Cyndee Reese took first place in 100 meters. ______ Boys relay teams in 4x100 and 4x400 and girls 4x400 landed in first places also.

Celtics In Lee's Summit Baseball Tournament

The Archbishop O'Hara High School baseball team split two games on April 18 in Pool A of the Mid Season Classic Varsity Baseball Tournament in Lee's Summit, losing to Trumam 14-2 and defeating Belton 5-2. _____ Cullen Rowland was O'Hara's winning pitcher and the big hit of the game was a solo home run by Jacob Chichuk. _____In the game the Celtics lost, Austin Percy was O'Hara's starting pitcher and did very well for four innings during which time the team led 2-1 before the Patriots broke through to move into the lead 4-2. _____ Relief pitchers did not fare well in the last two innings when the game became a rout. ______ O'Hara lost their next two games 12-2 to Lee's Summit and 10-2 to Blue Springs South but won 7-3 in their final game with William Chrisman.

Girls Soccer Enjoy Two Shut Outs

The Archbishop O'Hara High School girls soccer team shut out Pleasant Hill 5-0 and Center 8-0. Derrianna White was the goalkeeper for both games. _____ In the game with Pleasant Hill, Angela Fenani found the range twice with Sydney White, Ciru Franklin, and Lindsay Beachner each adding a goal. _____ Sydney White scored three goals and Andi Davis put in two in the Center game. _____ Individual scores were kicked by Katie Hayes, Lindsay Beachner, and Katie Brage.

Celtics In Recent Track Relays

The O'Hara athletes that took first places in the Center Track Relays on April 12 were Jorge Belcher (shotput, discus, and 100 meter dash),Jasper Greeson (200 and 400 meter runs), Tanner Hull (pole vault and long jump), Andy Meyer in the 1600 meter run, Skyler Young in shotput, Cydnee Reese in discus, Paige Bush in the 400 meter run, and Stephanie DeBitetto in pole vaulting. _____ _____ ______The next day at the Eagles Relays in Holden, the two Celtic teams came in second. _____First places in this meet were Jasper Greeson in the 200 and 400 dashes, Andy Meyer in the 1600 meter run, Skyler Young in shotput, Cyndee Reese in discus, Whitney Nelson in high jump, and in pole vaulting both Dakota Waggerman and Tanner Hull.

O'HARA PROM COURT CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED

Natalya Washington, Brynn Thibault, Molly Flores, and Jackie Bartholome are candidates for Archbishop O'Hara's Prom Queen. _____ For Prom King, Caleb Schmidt, Alex Ralph, Kyle Quirk, and JeVon Lyle are the candidates. ______ The Queen and King will be announced at the 2011 Prom on April 16.

4th Place for Celtics in Tennis

In the Ruskin Tennis Tournament on April 11, the O'Hara team missed third place by a half point. _____ In the "A" Flight, Kyle Quirk placed second while the doubles team of John Tyler & Matt Shelton were 4th. ______ Joe Locascio in singles and the team of Brandon Dennis & Connor Burke in doubles placed 3rd in the "B" Flight.

O'HARA WINS A CLOSE TRI-MEET IN GOLF

Teamwork was the bottom line in Archbishop O'Hara's 180-182-182 win in golf with West Central Conference teams Smith-Cotton and Clinton on April 6. _____ Ryan Wald had the Celtics' low score of 42 followed by Tanner Bainbridge 43, Jack Caywood 46, and Amere Taylor 49. _______ The meet medalist was Clinton's Adam Cummings with 38 but his teammates did not give enough support to win the contest. _______ Brendan Hurley had Smith-Cottons best score of 41. ______ _____ Then on April 7, the Celtics were matched against Warrensburg and Saint Pius X. ______The Warrensburg Tigers won easily with a low score of 151 while both of the other teams tied with 176. _____ For O'Hara, the individual scores were Tanner Bainbridge 39, Jack Caywood 41, Ryan Wald 46, and James Braddish 50.

Four Celtics Win Firsts in Track Invitational

Of the four first places that O'Hara athletes won at the April 2nd Odessa Track Invitational, two were for pole vaulting. ______ Tanner Hull won with a height of 12'0" for the boys division and Dakota Waggerman won with a height of 10'0" for the girls. _____ Jasper Greeson was first in the 400 meter run timed at 50.75 and Cydnee Reese took first in discus with a throw of 118'6". ______ The girls team came in 4th and the boys tied with Richmond for 6th. ______ Warrensburg was the top team in both the girls and boys competition.

On March 31, the Archbishop O'Hara High School baseball team won 14-1 against Center; the golf team won in a tri-meet scoring a low 173 with Saint Mary's 180 and Odessa 185; the tennis team topped Clinton 6-3. _____ Jack Caywood was the golf medalist with a 40 on a par 35 Royal Meadows Course. _____ Kyle Quirk, Matt Shelton, Brandon Dennis, and John Tyler won their singles matches in tennis.

The Warrensburg Tigers beat O'Hara Celtics tennis team 8-1 on March 30 but Kyle Quirk was able to win the #1 singles by a close 9-8 score. ____ The team of Kyle Quirk and Matt Shelton weren't able to win the #1 doubles however, falling by a 3-8 score.

Led by Jack Caywood's 39, the Archbishop O'Hara's High School's golf team scored a victory at the Shiloh Springs Golf Course against Platte County 188-198 on a cold and windy March 28th. _____The four other team members contributing to the Celtics' win were Ryan Wald 45, Amere Tayloer 52, and Tanner Branbridge 52. ______ Joe Schramp is O'Hara's golf coach. _______ Par for the Course was 37.

Saint Peter's Grade School Takes First Place in O'Hara Math Contest

In the 2011 O'Hara Math Contest on March 25, Saint Peter's Grade School outpointed Saint Elizabeth's 646 to 605 to win First Place. _____ Presentation took third place with 553 points. _____ Making the top five in each grade level for Saint Peter's were Liam Bryson, Brady Bird, and Maggie Hutchinson in grade 8, Alex Tangen and Daniel Stanley in grade 7, and Madi Winfield, Sam Nulton, and Harris Bryson in grade 6. _____ For Saint Elizabeth's, Manion Kuhm was among the top five in grade 8, Maggie Mannebach and Jimmy Ludwikowski in grade 7, and Becca Lauschen and Brandon Odrowski in grade 6. _____ C. J. Naudet made the top five in grade 7 for Presentation while Nick McCracken was in the top five in grade 8 for Nativity.

CELTICS OPEN BASEBALL SEASON IN RAYTOWN TOURNAMENT

The O'Hara Celtics began the 2011 baseball season on March 21 winning a 4-2 game with the Raytown Bluejays in the Raytown Schools Varsity Baseball Tournament in the Blue Pool at Robinson Field. _____ Jake Slocum was O'Hara's starting pitcher with Cullen Rowland picking up the save. _____ Three of the Celtics' runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning as O'Hara went up 4-0 at that time. _____ Of the team's seven hits in the game, five were doubles. _____ _____ The Oak Grove Panthers won the next day 11-1 in a five inning contest, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings. _____ Austin Pearcy was O'Hara's starter while Logan Halil and Jacob Chichuk pitched the final three. _____ The Celtics' five singles were by Austin Pearcy, Sam Janet, Cullen Rowland, Jake Slocum, and Eric Sullentrup who got O'Hara's lone RBI. _____ _____ On the third day of the tournament, the Van Horn Falcons were unable to push a run across with Logan Halil pitching a complete game for the Celtics. _____ The big hit for O'Hara was a triple by Preston Kralicek as the Celtics scored four runs in the game.______ _____ On the last day of the tournament, the Celtics tied for third place in the eight-team tournament with the Cardinals from Raytown South 4-4 while Oak Grove won first palce with a 15-8 decision over the Liberty North Eagles.

O'Hara's Talent Show Winners

Pianist Jae Won Choi won First Place in the recent Talent Show held at Archbishop O'Hara High School. _____ Tying for Second place were singers Brianna Griffin and Judith Becker. _____ The eight other performers were Audry Burdett, Ciru Franklin, Christina Lee, Patrick Berney, Alex Moran, Josh Snow, Cynthia Ononye, and the duet of Sam Morrison & Ben Janet. _____ Judging the talents were Sue Martin, Terri Colombatto, and Joanne Perkins.

CELTICS ON ALL-CONFERENCE BASKETBALL TEAMS

Undefeated in the West Central Conference, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics boys team landed the following on the All Conference Team. _____ D.J. Jackson was voted the player of the year and made the First Team All Conference. _____ Josh Rupprecht and Daniel Hurtt both made the First Team as well. _____ For the girls' team, Amanda Hull was a unanimous selection in making the First Team All-Conference. _____ Cyndee Reese was a Second Team member while Madison Clark and Lindsey Hanaway were Honorable Mentions. _____

FYI Who Were O'Hara's Seven Principals?

Brother Bernard LoCoco was the first principal at Archbishop O'Hara High School and served from 1965 to 1969. Although Brother Stephen O'Malley was selected for the position in 1968 and did sign one letter to parents as principal, he declined to take on the job. Brother Richard Geimer was the principal for one year, 1969-1970. He was succeeded by Brother Timothy McNary for a few years and was followed by Brother Norbert Roseberry for nine years. Stu Bitner and Walter Bowman each were principal for fifteen years each, and the last two years the position was held by Dr. Jim Redd. Brothers Stephen O'Malley, Timothy McNary, and Norbert Roseberry have passed away.

The eighth principal is John O'Connor who succeeded Dr. Redd's two years.

UMC MATH RELAYS WON BY O'HARA

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Math Team won their division at the University of Central Missouri on March 5. _____ Of the ten team members who contributed to the O'Hara victory, sophomore Ethan Ambrose led the way. _____ He placed in all five of the categories he entered. _____ He had firsts in Algebra, Geometry, and Probability, and fifth in Number & Set Theory. _______ Ben Kirse was the Top overall freshman with a first in Algebra and fifth in Geometry. _____ Nick Hanaway and Mike Wulff won first place as a Math Proofs Team, while Wulff also was third in Probability, fourth in Graphing Calculators, and fifth in Geometry. _____ Two seconds were achieved by Jacob Duerr in Algebra and Number & Set Theory. _____ Three students each placed in two categories: Jason Jarquio in Trigonometry (2nd) and Algebra (4th), Sarah Rupp in Trigonometry (4th) and Algebra (5th), and Joseph Locasio in Geometry (4th) and Algebra (5th). _____ Freshman Alex Higginbotham was third in Algebra and sophomore Eric Sullentrup was fifth in Algebra. _____ Finally the following scored high enough to place in the four Teams. _____ Ben Kirse and Alex Higginbotham for first place for the 9th Grade Team, Jacob Duerr and Sarah Rupp for third place for the 11th Grade Team, Jason Jarquio and Joseph Locasio for third place for the 12th Grade Team, and Ethan Ambrose and Eric Sullentrup for fourth place for the 10th Grade Team. ______ Ten schools were represented in Division III.

Three-Way Tie in Academic Knowledge Bowl

The Archbishop O'Hara High School varsity team of Josh Bonello, Andy Meyer, Kiera Jackson, Jake Fortin, Jeff Best, and George Morejon won two out of three games in the March 5th West Central Conference Academic Knowledge Bowl. ______ Both teams from Smith-Cotton and Saint Pius did the same to form a three-way tie. _____ First place was awarded in the tie-breaker based on total points to Saint Pius. _____ Smith-Cotton won the head-to-head competition to land in second place. _____ Warrensburg took fourth place and the teams from Center and Clinton did not compete even though Center will host the event next year and Clinton the following year. ____ This year's competition was in Warrensburg. _____ The Celtics lost 100-140 to Smith-Cotton, but were winners over Saint Pius 210-170 and Warrensburg 150-70. _____ _____ O'Hara brought two JV teams to the event. _____ The team consisting of Jeremy Ambrose, Thaddeus Green, Cynthia Oneye, Hailey Jordan, and Joshus Austin won 260-20 with Smith-Cotton. ______ The team made up of Tony Darling, Alex Countee, Bridget O'Shaughnessy, Annie Mahlberg, and Ronald Clark lost to Saint Pius 310-210. _____ Laura Eagle was the O'Hara coach this year.

O'HARA HAS TO SETTLE FOR RUNNER-UP IN DISTRICT

The O'Hara Celtics boys team were off to a good start in the Championship basketball game for Class 3 District 14 with Hogan, but a sluggish second half let the Rams surge ahead to win 59-41 on March 4. _____ The Celtics jumped to a 5-0 beginning and never trailed throughout the entire first half of the game, leading at one time by seven points. _____ At halftime O'Hara was only ahead by two at 26-24. ______ The tide turned in the third quarter when Maurice Mason went on a nine point spree and helped put the Rams up by six to start the last quarter. ______ Every strategy the Celtics used fell short including three-point attempts and half court presses. ______ Finally the Rams capitalized on their height under the basket for a 21 point burst in the fourth quarter which the Celtics couldn't come close to matching. _____ O'Hara's top scoring duet was Josh Rupprecht with 14 and Daniel Hurtt with 12.

In Class 3/District 14, the O'Hara boys basketball team moved into the Championship game against Hogan Prep by handing the Barstow Knights a 66-58 setback. ______ Hogan meanwhile had little difficulty getting past Imagine Renaissance Academy 75-40. _____ The Celtics had won easily 76-41 in their first round game with the Cristo Rey Pumas on February 28. _____ In that game the Celtics scored the game's first fifteen points eventually building up a 19-4 first quarter score. _____ By halftime the score rose to 46-15 and the Celtics eased up providing playing time for their entire squad. _____ Josh Rupprecht and Daniel Hurtt combined for a total of 37 of O'Hara's total in the game. ______ Spreading the scoring among the other players, Tanner Hull had 9, Josh Madden had 8, Brandon Dennis had 7, and Rayshaun McDonald had 7. _____ _____ In the semifinal game against Barstow, four O'Hara players were in double figures while the Knights depended on only two to reach that level. _____ Josh Rupprecht poured in 23 points for O'Hara with Daniel Hurtt accounting for 14, DJ Jackson 13, and Kyle Baker 12 (on four three-point shots). _____ O'Hara dominated the first half and led at halftime 38-26, but the Knights rallied for a productive third quarter before the Celtics outpointed them 20-10 in the fourth. _____ For Barstow freshman Cole Childers had 20 points and Lawrence Brown scored 11. _____ _______Barstow had won their game with Pembroke Hill 59-50 to set up the O'Hara-Barstow match. _____ In the other bracket Saint Pius was eliminated by Hogan Prep 69-42 and Imagine Renaissance Academy had advanced with a close 75-74 victory over University Academy Charter.

DISTRICT PLAY BEGINS FOR #2 RANKED O'HARA CELTICS

In a 3-A State ranking that came out of February 23, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics Boys team landed in second place behind a team from Hamilton, Missouri. _____ The next four spots were taken by Cameron, Cardinal Ritter, Blair Oaks, and Stafford. ______ Rounding out the top ten are Hogan Prep, Charleston, Willow Springs, and Kennett. _______ District competition begins during the first week in March.

Sunrise Academy Buffaloes Are Too Much for Celtics

The O'Hara High School Celtics basketball team hosted the Sunrise Academy Buffaloes and had their hands full losing 84-58. _______ Even though DJ Jackson poured in 26 points for O'Hara and Josh Rupprecht tagged on 15, the visitors scored 39 of their points on thirteen three-pointers. _____ The game was played on Monday, February 21.

UNDEFEATED CELTICS ARE WEST CENTRAL CONFERENCE BASKETBALL CHAMPS IN 2011

On February 18, the Archbishop O'Hara High School basketball team won its 10th West Central Conference game of the 2010-2011 season defeating second place Center by a score of 80-66. _____ The game was close until nearing the end of the second quarter when the two teams were tied at 32-32. _____ The Celtics then went on a nine point run to close out the first half ahead 41-32. _____Josh Rupprecht dominated under the boards and emerged the Celtics' top scorer with 27 points. _______ Although doing most of his scoring in the fourth quarter, DJ Jackson had 20 points. _____ He was followed by Kyle Baker's 12 points on four three-point shots and Daniel Hurtt's steady contribution with 11 points. _____ The 6-4 Center Yellowjackets had lost to O'Hara 61-51 in their previous outing. _____ ______ Earlier in the week, O'Hara was a 76-62 winner over Sedalia Smith-Cotton. ______ ______Following the boys varsity game with Center, the girls varsity took a 42-31 victory over the Yellowjackets. _____ The Lady Celtics had to come from five points behind in the first quarter and only managed to narrow the margin to two points at halftime trailing 18-16. _____ The game was pretty much decided in the third quarter wherein Center was held to three tallies while O'Hara put up eleven. ______ The top three scorers for the Celtics were Marli Bartlett with 11 and Alex Fennesy and Amanda Hull each with 9.

BOYS: On February 28, O'Hara is scheduled to play the winner of the Don Bosco-Cristo Rey game. _____ The winner of this game faces the winner of the Barstow-Pembroke Hill contest to be played on March 2. _____ Teams from the other bracket are University Academy, Hogan, Saint Pius, and Imagine. ______ ______ GIRLS: O'Hara plays University Academy on March 1. _____ The winner of this game faces the team that survives from Don Bosco, Saint Pius, and Imagine to be played on March 3. _____ Teams from the other bracket are Barstow,Hogan, Cristo Rey, and Pembroke Hill.

O'HARA WIN WEST CENTRAL CONFERENCE

On February 11 O'Hara hosted the girls and boys basketball teams from Warrensburg and won both games. ____ The boys game ended with a 60-49 score while the girls game went into overtime until the Lady Celtics emerged a 47-42 winner. _____ Along with Sedalia's 56-51 win over Center on the same night, the Celtics are guaranteed the Championship in the West Central Conference with a record of 8-0 with two remaining games to be played. ____ Center, O'Hara's closest rival, went to 6-3 with their loss. _____ _____ In the boys O'Hara-Warrensburg contest, the Tigers came out strong at the start and went ahead 15-4. _____ However, the Celtics worked their way back to complete the first quarter down by just four points at 15-11. _____ By halftime the margin was two points 26-24 but throughout the first half O'Hara never took the lead. _____ The fast-paced Celtics opened the third quarter with a 10-2 run behind baskets by Daniel Hurtt and Jevon Lyle, and the Celtics never trailed again. _____ 19 points were scored in the game by DJ Jackson while Daniel Hurtt was good for 15 and Jevon Lyle came through with 11. _____ The top point producer in the game was TJ Cutler who had 24 points, 18 of which were three-pointers but he was the only Tiger player that was in double figures. _____ _____ In the girls varsity game, the Tigers owned a one-point lead 22-21 at the half and the Celtics were ahead 33-32 after three quarters. _____ The teams were knotted at 39-39 at the end of regulation time after the Celtics missed on their last five free throws in the fourth quarter. _____ Momentarily the Tigers had a slim lead of 41-39 at the beginning of overtime but only managed one additional point while the O'Hara players were constantly being sent to the free throw line. _____ Remarkably the O'Hara players missed on eleven free throws in the overtime period alone. ____ They did cash in on six however which was more than enough for the win.

Celtics Take Control in WCC Basketball

With Daniel Hurtt pouring in 22 points, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team took control of the West Central Conference standings with a win over Center 61-51 on February 9. _____ The Celtics remained undefeated in Conference play with a 7-0 record and the Yellowjackets, O'Hara's closest rival, went to 6-2. _____ Others in the Conference are Saint Pius 3-5, Smith-Cotton 2-4, Warrensburg 2-5, and Clinton 1-5. _____ The big difference in the O'Hara-Center game was the 26 points scored by the Celtic squad in the second quarter holding Center to 14 points. _____ At the half the score was 35-22. _____ O'Hara guards Jevon Lyle and DJ Jackson put pressure on the Yellowjackets on defense and scored 17 and 12 points respectively on offense.

VOLLEYBALL CONGRATULATIONS

Victoria Hurtt was name to the PREP VOLLEYBALL ALL-AMERICAN FIRST TEAM and Lindsey Hanaway was selected as an Honorable Mention All-American. ______ Also Annie Mahlberg, Lindsey Hanaway, Michala Boehm, and Madison Clark were named to the MISSOURI VOLLEYBALL ALL-STATE ACADEMIC TEAM.

Celtics in Belton Wrestling Tourney

Jeremy Ambrose was 6th in the Belton Tournament on February 5 while Ethan Ambrose, Eero Johnson and Miles Womack were 7th. _______ In the pool competition Jeremy Ambrose pinned two opponents from Belton and Adrian. ________Also in the pool competition, Miles Womack won with a pin against a Winnetonka wrestler and so did Eero Johnson against a Raytown wrestler. ______Ethan Ambrose in the pool round won a 4-1 decision with a Higginsville athlete. _____ _____ On February 8 Ethan Ambrose added to his list of wins by pinning a wrestler from Sherwood.
