O'HARA IS SECOND IN THE WILLIAM JEWELL HOLIDAY CLASSIC

In the Cardinal Division of the 31st annual BANK MIDWEST/WILLIAM JEWELL HOLIDAY BASKETBALL CLASSIC, on December 30th, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics won the second place trophy to the Kickapoo Chiefs 71-64. _______ The Chiefs are without a loss in eleven games while the Celtics moved to 8-1 for the season. _____ Except for a run of ten unanswered points by the Chiefs at the start of the third quarter, the two teams matched quite well. ______ Two O'Hara players made the All Tournament Team: DJ Jackson and Jevon Lyle. ______ For the victorious Chiefs, Ryan Rippee was named the most valuable player and Tyler Hall made the All Tournament Team. _____ O'Hara had a four point lead within the first quarter of play but Kickapoo moved to within one point by the end of the period when the score was 18-17. _____ The second quarter wasn't much different ending in a 32-32 tie. _____ In the deciding third quarter, the Chiefs outscored the Celtics 18-11 after which both teams poured in 21 points apiece in the fourth quarter. ______ With 18 seconds remaining in the game, O'Hara was down by five 69-62 but couldn't come up with a miraculous finish. _____ Four Celtics reached double figures. _______ DJ Jackson had 26, Daniel Hurtt had 13, and both Jevon Lyle and Josh Rupprecht had 10. _______ ________ ________ _______ On December 29, the Celtics won their semifinal game 47-46 with the Park Hill South Panthers taking the loss. ______ Daniel Hurtt got the winning basket with ten seconds on the clock. _____ Just before the deciding two-pointer, Jevon Lyle made a steal and layup to bring O'Hara to within one point. _____ Christain Hildebrandt who led all scorers with 16, attempted a shot from three point range for the Panthers but was unable to score. _____ The only other double figures player for the Panthers was Rocky Benson who had 13. _____ At the end of each quarter of the game the two teams either were tied or had only two points of separation. ______ In the first quarter, the Celtics led by five at 7-2 until the Panthers caught up to tie it at 11-11. _____ Again in the second quarter O'Hara went up by five at 19-14 only to have the Panthers rally to within two for 23-21 at halftime. _____ In the third quarter, the Celtics owned a seven point advantage at 26-21 and the Panthers clawed back to tie the game at 35-35. _____ Near the end of the contest the Panthers finally managed to go ahead 44-43 and then increase the score to 46-43 after which Lyle and Hurtt stepped up to win the game. _____ The Panthers never had more than a three point lead in the entire game. _____ Daniel Hurtt and DJ Jackson led the O'Hara scorers with 13 apiece in the low scoring game while Jevon Lyle added ten points. _____ ______ ______ ______ On December 28, the Celtics handed the Kearney Bulldogs a 61-49 set back to advance to the semifinals. _____ The Celtics built up a six point lead in the first quarter with Jevon Lyle pouring in a dozen points, nine of which were three-pointers. _____ He led the O'Hara attack for the evening with a total of 16 points. _____ DJ Jackson finished the day with 15 points; all but two points came in the second half of the game. _____ Josh Rupprecht added 14 points, eight of which materialized in the third quarter.

Raphael Spencer All-Metro Honors

With the Archbishop O'Hara football team reaching the quarterfinals in State competition, running back Raphael Spencer made the All-Metro Offensive Second Team for 2010. ______ With 372 career points, he is O'Hara's all time top scorer! _____ He scored 180 points in each of his senior and junior years which are also school records for individual seasons. _____ His 3,642 yards gained placed him second in total career yards. ____ In 2010 he gained 2001 yards for second place for a single season and in 2009 he had 2454 yards for sixth place. _____ As a versitle player, he also stepped in as a quarterback, kickoff returner, defensive back, and pass receiver when the occasions arose.

VICTORIA HURTT ALL-METRO FIRST TEAM VOLLEYBALL

Tory Hurtt who played on the Archbishop O'Hara State Champion volleyball team for the past four years was selected to the FIRST TEAM ALL-METRO. _____ Her 129 blocks and 488 kills as a middle hitter this season gave her a .455 hitting efficiency. _____ Teammates Lindsey Hanaway and Michala Boehm were given Honorable Mention recognition for All-Metro. ______ Victoria plans to attend Iowa State next year.

O'Hara Celtics 75 Warrensburg Tigers 62

On December 21 The O'Hara boys won 75-62 and the O'Hara girls won 42-34 at Warrensburg. _____ In the boys varsity game,three Celtics scored 20 points apiece, Kyle Baker, Josh Ruprecht, and DJ Jackson. _____ With uncanny accuracy six of Baker's shots were three-pointers. _____ The Tigers owned a brief one point lead in the first quarter 9-8 which but it was immediately followed by a 12-2 run by the Celtics. _____ The height advantage of the Celtics was evident inasmuch as nearly half of the Tigers' points materialized from ten three-point shots. _____ O'Hara stretched their lead to 42-26 at the half pouring in 26 points in the second quarter. _____ Daniel Hurtt added 12 points, all in the first half. ______ For Warrensburg, Dakota Jones finished the day with 13 points followed by Clint Smith with 12. _____ _____In the girls varsity game, the Celtics built up a 39-24 advantage in three quarters and then let up in the fourth.______ O'Hara's Lindsey Hanaway pumped in four three-pointers and led in the scoring with a total of 16 points. _____ Cydnee Reese was the only other player in the game in double figures with 12 for the Celtics.

O'HARA ACADEMIC KNOWLEDGE BOWL VARSITY

Invited to represent Archbishop O'Hara High School in the Academic Knowledge Bowl for the West Central Conference varsity squad are the members from last year's District Team which tied for third place. _____ They are Josh Bonello, Andy Meyer, Kierra Jackson, and Jake Fortin._______ Bonello, Meyer, and Jackson were also three players who were on the West Central Conference Championship Team in March 2010. _____ The fourth member of the Cenference Championship team was Mike Berney who graduated in the Spring. ______ Fortin was a member of the Second Place JV team last year. _____ For this year's JV competition seven students are being invited to try out. _____ They are in alphabetical order Claire Banderas, Jeff Best, James Bradish, James Campo, Maddie Champion, Alex Coutree, and Tony Darling. ______ A freshman team will evolve after January 4th. _____ The O'Hara freshman teams have not been defeated in the last nine years in the West Central Conference even though each year a new squad has to be formed. _____ The last O'Hara freshman team that did not reach first place was in 2001 when Kearney (then a member of the Conference)won first place with Warrensburg second, O'Hara third, and Smith-Cotton fourth. _____ On the varsity level, in addition to last year, O'Hara won the Conference in 2008 and in 2005. ______ This schoolyear the West Central Conference competition will either be on March 12th as orginally schedul3d or possibly moved up a week to March 5th to avoid a conflict with Spring breaks.

Celtics get Past Cardinals by Twenty 91-71

In a game that had been postponed from an earlier date when the weather threatened, the Archbishop O'Hara High School basketball team was a 91-71 winner over the Clinton Cardinals on December 20th. _____ For the victorious Celtics, DJ Jackson poured in 39 points, 17 in the first quarter and 16 in the third quarter. _______ The Cardinals trailed throughout the contest coming only as close as five points early in the third frame at 44-39, but the Celtics put in the next dozen points and remained in command the remainder of the game. _____ Josh Ruprecht helped the O'Hara cause with nine points in the first quarter and completed the day with 21 points. _____ Daniel Hurtt was the only other O'Hara player in double figures with 11.

CHASE SCOTT TAKES FIFTH PLACE IN WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

Four wrestlers from O'Hara competed at the 16 team Raytown South Tournament with Chase Scott reaching fifth place in his weight class. _____ He hade five wins in the two day competition, four with pins and one by a technical fall. _______ Two wrestlers won single matches with pins: Danijo Adams and Jeremy Ambrose. ______ Miles Womack also won a match on a decision.

Lady Celtics Unable to Catch Up In Hy-Vee Play

For three of the four quarters that the O'Hara Lady Celtics played against Miege in the Hy-Vee Shootout, the squad was able to keep pace in O'Hara loss 49-30. ______ However those quarters came after the young squad fell well behind 15-4 in the first quarter. _____ Senior Lindsey Hanaway had three three-pointers for her nine points and freshman Amanda Hull led the Celtics in scoring with ten points.

O'HARA SEEDED THIRD IN HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Participating in the Cardinal Bracket of the Bank Midwest Holiday Basketball Classic at William Jewell, the O'Hara Celtics will face the Kearney Bulldogs on December 28th at 9 PM. _____ O'Hara is seeded #3. _____ The winner between the Park Hill South Panthers (seeded #2) and the Central Blue Eagles will play the winner of the O'Hara-Kearney game on the 29th at 1:30 PM. _____ The Championship game is scheduled for the 30th at 7:30 PM with the surviver of the four teams of the other bracket. _____ Those teams are the Kickapoo Chiefs (seeded #1), the Blue Springs South Jaguars (seeded #4), the Saint Joseph Central Indians, and the Pleasant Hill Roosters.

Celtics Rally over Saints for 62-53 Win

At the Hy-Vee Shootout on December 16th, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys varsity basketball team came from behind to win by nine points playing the Saint Thomas Aquinas Saints 62-53. _____ The win kept the O'Hara team undefeated but for the first time this season they trailed for three quarters before surging ahead with a 24-11 fourth quarter. _____ Three O'Hara athletes reached double figures accounting for all but nine of the Celtics' points. _____ DJ Jackson scored 19 while both Daniel Hurtt and Jevon Lyle had 17 apiece. ______ O'Hara was behind by two points going into the second quarter of play and found themselves down by five halfway through the game. ______ At one time the Saints led by eight when the score was 38-30. ______ During the fourth quarter when the Celtics finally took the lead, the Saints had two technical fouls called that helped spread the point advantage at a critical time of the contest.

LADY CELTICS WIN A CONFERENCE BASKETBALL GAME

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Lady Celtics won 58-36 in their West Central Conference game with the Clinton Cardinals on December 15th. ______ Using a strong defense in the initial quarter, the Celtics jumped to a 22-6 advantage and coasted to a victory in which nine O'Hara players added to the total score. ______ Top point producers were Amanda Hull who had 15 and Lindsey Hanaway with 11.

O'Hara is Too Fast for Smith-Cotton

The O'Hara High School boys varsity basketball team used their speed and skillful ballhandling to register a 68-35 win on December 13th against the Sedalia Smith-Cotton Tigers. _____ The Celtics led the entire game although a three-pointer at the buzzer ending the first quarter by Spencer White kept the game close at that time 16-13. _____ Jevon Lyle scored seven of his 23 game points in that period. ______ DJ Jackson added ten points in the second quarter as the Celtics took a halftime advantage at 32-23. ______ The third quarter left no doubt about the direction the game was heading as the Tigers were outscored 25-11. _____ Jevon Lyle poured in fourteen more points as the Celtics capitalized on steals and layups. ______ In addition to Lyle's and Jackson's dominance in the O'Hara scoring, Daniel Hurtt had eleven points most of which was under the basket. _____ The Celtic defense was so strong during the fourth quarter with the running clock that the Tigers were held to just one free throw during that period!

JAYEL GANT TAKES FIRST PLACE IN SPEECH

O'Hara freshman Jayel Gant won FIRST PLACE in Poetry Interpretation at the Raytown High School Speech Tournament on Saturday, December 11th. ______ The competition at the tournament was from twenty participating schools with over 500 contestants. _____ O'Hara students earning some excellent ballots were Austin Stockard, Kierra Jackson, Nalley Saavedra, Hailey Jordan, and Cynthia Ononye. _____ Among the debate teams, the team of Austin Yancy & Natalie Berigan won three rounds, and the team of Payton Hannahs & James Campo won one round.

Lady Celtics in Kickapoo Invitational

The Archbishop O'Hara High School girls varsity basketball team took on the Kickapoo Chiefs in the Kickapoo Invitational with a round robin game losing 67-34 on December 9th. ______ Top scorers for the Lady Celtics were Cydnee Reese and Amanda Hull, both of whom missed double figures by two points. _____ On Friday O'Hara lost to the Rogers Mounties 61-27 and Kickapoo beat the Purdy Eagles 49-42. _____ Rogers went on to win the tournament by defeating Kickapoo 59-54. _____ On Saturday O'Hara got 6 points by Cydnee Reese, 5 points from both MaKenzie Magwire and Madison Clark, and 4 points from Amanda Hull and Alex Fennessy losing 61-24 to the Purdy Eagles.

CLINTON JV TEAMS NO MATCH FOR CELTICS

On December 8th, the girls and boys junior varsity teams from Clinton and O'Hara played in the Celtic gym and the Celtics were winners 49-24 in the girls' contest and 74-28 in the boys' game. _____ After pulling ahead 32-16 in three quarters the Lady Celtics outpointed the Lady Cardinals 17-8 in the final quarter. _____ In the boys' conflict, O'Hara sped to a 20-2 lead and reached 27-6 by the end of the quarter. _____ The Celtics had 50 points by the half holding the Cardinals to just 10 points. _____ Ray McDonald, one of O'Hara's shorter ballplayers, scored constantly, often on layups, and was the game's top scorer with 26 points. _____ Amere Taylor and Brandon Dennis also were in double figures and the entire O'Hara bench had a lot of playing time.

Celtics Top Raiders 93-61

Led by Josh Ruprect's 30 points, the Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team dealt the Pembroke Hill Raiders a 93-61 loss on December 7th at O'Hara. _____ The Celtics jumped to a 15-6 first quarter advantage but the Raiders caught fire scoring the next ten points to emerge ahead 16-15 heading into the second period. _____ Ruprecht dominated the scoring in the following two quarters putting in 12 in the second and 9 in the third as O'Hara took control the remainder of the way. _____ In the second quarter alone, the Celtics poured in 34 points and then added 30 more in the third quarter. ______ The Celtics could have reached the century mark but the game ended with a running clock holding the fourth quarter scoring down. _____ While Charley Doering with 17 points and Ben Keeton with 13 points led the Raiders, the Celtics got 16 from DJ Jackson and 14 from sophomore Kyle Baker. _____Baker connected on four three-pointers in the game. _____ Daniel Hurtt had 10 points and Jevon Lyle had 8 wherein Hurtt contributed under the basket while Lyle dazzled the crowd with layups. _____ Prior to the varsity game, the fast-paced JV team from O'Hara won an 81-49 game that also ended with a running clock.

FRESHMEN BASKETBALL EDGED BY SMITHVILLE

The O'Hara freshman boys basketball team lost a close game to Smithville 45-42 after a magnificent first quarter wherein the Celtics led by nine 15-6 and at the half by six 31-25. _____ The team began the fourth quarter three points ahead until finally the Warriors inched into the lead. _____ O'Hara had four three-pointers in the first quarter and three in the second ending the day with a total of eight. _____ Alex Wagner connected on four of them and Alex Higinbotham had two. _____ Michael Words and Montel Caruthers had the remaining two. _____ A three-point attempt was made at the final buzzer by Montel Caruthers to try to tie the game but it missed. ______ Prior to the game, the O'Hara freshman girls basketball team with only eight players lost by ten 42-32.

Basketball O'Hara 70 Saint Pius 51

Archbishop O'Hara High School opened its 2010-2011 basketball season with a West Central Conference win 70-51 on November 29 hosting the Saint Pius X Warriors. _____ The Celtics jumped to a 13-2 start and maintained a comfortable lead throughout the night. _____ D.J. Jackson with 20 points and Josh Ruprecht with 19 points led the way. _____ Also contributing to the victory was Daniel Hurtt who contributed 12 points and JeVon Lyle had 8. _______ By the end of the initial period, O'Hara had doubled Pius' output 24-12. _____ The top two scorers from Saint Pius were Brian Kaufmann who led all scorers with 23 points and Mac Mason with 10.______ _____ _____Prior to the boys varsity game, the girls varsity resulted in a win for the Warriors 57-46. ______ Early in that game, the Celtics had a three point lead but then the Lady Warriors scored twelve unanswered points to begin the second quarter ahead 15-6. _____ O'Hara narrowed the margin to three points 17-14 in the middle of the second quarter and again to three points 26-23 in the middle of the third quarter. _____ Only two seniors were on the team and the top scorer for the Lady Celtics was freshman Amanda Hull who scored 18 points. _____ Two others made double figures, both sophomores: Madison Clark with 11 and Cyndee Reese with 10._____ The top two scorers from Saint Pius were Lexie Oak who led all scorers with 23 and Danielle Kaullen with 11.

FIFTH PLACE MEDAL & TROPHY IN SPEECH TOURNAMENT

Park Hill South had 30 schools with over 900 entries in their Speech Tournament on November 2oth. ______ From Archbishop O'Hara High School, Johanna Kelly took a 5th place medal in Original Oratory Speaking (out of 56 entries). ______ Winning a trophy for 5th place were Natalie Berigan & Payton Hannahs in Publis Forum Debate who had four wins with no losses in the preliminaries. _____ Two other teams that competed with 2/2 records were Gabe Spencer & Austin Yancey and Jayla Smith & Cyndee Reese.

O'Hara Football Matches a Feat from Last Year

This year the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics football team lost to Richmond in the quarterfinals and last year they lost to Cassville in the semifinals. ______ Cassville went on to win the State Championship and this Year Richmond also won the State Title beating John Boroughs. _____ O'Hara ended the season 5-7 after a 0-5 start. ______ In the final totaling, the team outpointed their opponents in EVERY quarter: 83-81 in the first quarter, 102-88 in the second quarter, 75-67 in the third quarter, and 88-85 in the fourth quarter. _____ THOSE IN THE TOP TEN IN SCHOOL RECORDS FOR SINGLE SEASONS: Raphael Spencer in rushing #2 this year with 2001 yards and #6 last year with 1454 yards. In kickoff returns he was #4 last year with 560 yards and #7 this year with 431 yards. In scoring, he scored 180 points to lead all O'Hara scorers for a season with 180 yards in each of the past two years._____ Quarterback Jake Fortin holds fifth place in passing from this year's season reaching 1092 total yards. _____ Pass receiver Brandon Dennis is #6 in total yardage with 556 yards on 25 catches which #10 in most caught. ______ Place kicker Julian Gidley tied for third in most extra points with 33 this year and tied for 7th place last year when he had 29. _____ THOSE IN THE TOP TEN IN SCHOOL CAREER RECORDS: Raphael Spencer is #2 in rushing with 3642 yards and #1 in kick return yardage with 1018 yards. He holds the school record for total points scored with over 370 points. _____ Jake Fortin completed 67 passes for 7th place and in yardage had 1114 yards for 9th place._____ Julian Gidley with 62 extra points ranks #3. _______ Of those that are in the top ten, Jake Fortin, Julian Gidley, and Brandon Dennis return for another O'Hara season.

HANAWAY SIGNS TO ATTEND BAKER UNIVERSITY

Lindsey Hanaway signed a letter of intent to attend Baker University. ______ She was the setter for the 3-A O'Hara State Volleyball Champions for the past four years and a member of the All-State First Team.

Sophomore John Tyler and junior Julian Gidley were selected to the All West Central Conference Soccer First Team. ______ Selected to the Second Team were juniors Patrick Berney and Justin Chang. ______ All four will be returning for the 2011 season.

O'Hara Will Bring Experience to 2011 Football Season

The 2010 O'Hara Celtics football team climbed all the way to the State Quarterfinals which was quite an accomplishment inasmuch as there were only five seniors on the roster. _____ In addition to Raphael Spencer who holds school records, the 2012 squad will have to proceed without the talents of Jake Chichuk, Josh Bonello, Jimmy Clark, and Lowell Thomas who will be graduating in the Spring. _____ The leadership roles will shift to others who helped carry the team through the challenging past season. ____ Quarterback Jake Fortin is 9th in O'Hara's top ten passers in career total yards with 1,114 on 67 completions (which is 7th in total number of career passes). _____ In the category of top ten passers for a single season, he is 5th in total yardage with 1,092 yards. _____ Brandon Dennis holds the O'Hara record for most yards gained as a pass receiver in a single game, and caught 25 passes for a total of 556 yards this year; only nine former Celtics caught more than 25 in any one season. ______ Julian Gidley kicked 33 extra points for O'Hara this year, tying Bryce Scovill for 3rd place for a season, and has increased his career total to 66 for 3rd place with a full season coming up. _____ Of course, Raphael Spencer who led the Celtic offense will be missed. _____ His career total rushing yardage is 3,642 yards second only to Matt Patterson's 5,396 which is the school record. _____ In his senior year he gained 2001 yards and a year ago gained 1,454 yards, good enough for 2nd and 6th places for single season output. _____ But where Spencer really excelled was in the scoring! _____ He scored more career points than any other Celtic with 372 and scored 180 in each of his junior and senior years, tops among all O'Hara scorers through the years. _____ In addition to the scoring of Spencer, Brandon Dennis had 54 points this season on 9 TD catches and Brett Coatney had 48 points on 8 rushing touchdowns.

MISSOURI WINS MO-KAN VOLLEYBALL

With four players from the 3-A State Champion Archbishop O'Hara team, the twelve Missouri All-Stars won their GKCVCA MO-KAN game against the Kansas All-Stars in three sets on November 14 at Avila University. ____ Coach Lori Hanaway coached the winning team which included players Tori Hurtt, Michala Boehm, Janell Jordan, and Lindsey Hanaway all from her own squad during the past season.

Celtics Football Team Falls to Richmond 49-14

Raphael Spencer added one more touchdown to his impressive career total, a 43 yard run, but the Celtics lost their State Quarterfinal game 7 TD's to 2. _____ Sophomore Ronnie Sailer scored O'Hara's last touchdown of their season in the fourth quarter. _____ Sailer's run was for 17 yards. _____ The Spartans built up a 35-7 halftime score and when they upped the advantaqe to 42-7, the game was played with a running clock. _____ Reaching the quarterfinals was quite a feat for a team that began the season 0-5 and had only five players who are seniors.

Football Top Ten Career Stats

For the second year in a row, Raphael Spencer had the most points scored for O'Hara. _____ Last year he had 180 and this season he is at 174 with 28 touchdowns and three two-point conversions. _____ As a result, overall he has taken over first place in career scoring with 366 points topping Matt Patterson's 346 points from 1998-2001. _____ Spencer with 931 yards in kickoff returns is second only to Joe Privitera from 1986-1988 who holds the record at 935 yards. _____ _____ Also Julian Gidley moved up in most extra points made by kicking to third place overall with a total of 60. ____ Last year he had 29 for the entire season and he already has 31 this year. _____ Gidley is in 5th place in career kickoff yardage too. _____ _____ With 24 catches this year, nine players are ahead of Brandon Dennis in number of pass receptions. _____ _____ Jake Fortin completed 60 passes this year for 1,051 yards placing him 5th best for a season. ______ He is tied for 7th in number of career pass completions and 10th place in yardage gained.

The Archbishop O'Hara High School State Champs in 3-A volleyball were honored as the HY-VEE team of the week and Lindsey Hanaway, a member of the team, was selected as scholar athlete of the week.

Victoria Hurtt Signs Letter of Intent to Iowa State

On November 9th Tori Hurtt signed a letter of intent to Iowa State University in the Archbishop O'Hara High School Theater. _______ She was accompanied by her parents Lewis and Martha, Head Volleyball Coach Lori Hanaway, Activities Director Alan Hull, Dr. Jim Redd Principal, and memebers of the O'Hara student body. ______ A letter of welcome and congratulations was read at the ceremony from Cyclone Coach Christie Johnson. ____ Coach Hanaway expressed her appreciation to Tori who was selected to All-Conference, All-District, All-Region, All- Metro, and All-State teams for the past four years for her excellence in volleyball. ______ In addition to leading in the scoring for the O'Hara State Championship teams in volleyball, Tori was also a member of the O'Hara basketball team last year that took Third in State.

CELTICS WIN 48-25 REACHING QUARTER FINALS

With a 48-25 victory on November 8 over Pembroke Hill, the Archbishop O'Hara football team reached the final eight in the State playoffs and will travel to undefeated Richmond on Saturday for a 1:30 game. _____ Last year the Celtics got to the final four before losing to Cassville, the State Champions. _______ Richmond won their game with Maryville 21-14 to get to the final eight. _______ The last time O'Hara and Pembroke Hill played, the score was 48-28. _____ In O'Hara's last four games, the Celtics scored 48 or more points in each game. _____ Raphael Spencer became O'Hara's all-time top scorer with his four touchdowns reaching a total of 366 eclipsing Matt Patterson's 346 points. ______ The rest of the O'Hara scoring in this game came from two touchdowns by Brett Coatney and one by Brandon Dennis along with six successful extra point kicks by Julian Gidley. _____ In the Monday night game, the Celtics jumped off to a 28-0 halftime advantage. _____ On O'Hara's first running play, Brett Coatney had an end run for 64 yards for the Celtics' first TD. _____ The Raiders' offense sputtered and the Celtics scored again on a six yard run by Raphael Spencer. ______ The touchdown was set up by a 26 yard pass by Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis. _____ The next time the Celtics got the ball, Brandon Dennis pulled in a Jake Fortin pass for a 27 yard touchdown boosting the score to 21-0 while still in the first quarter. _____ The longest play of the evening was in the second quarter and it was a 70 yard touchdown run by Raphael Spencer. ______ The Raiders scored three touchdowns in the third quarter to make the game interesting. _____An 10 yard TD run by Pembroke Hill's Patrick Freitag was followed by a 5 yard TD run by O'Hara's Brett Coatney. ______ On the ensuing kick, Jacob Gerson returned the kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. ______ Gerson also scored on a 5 yard run for a touchdown before the third quarter ended. _____ In the fourth quarter, Pembroke Hill scored first on a 10 yard pass play from Jacob Gerson to Charlie Mueller for their 25th and final points for the day and putting the score at 34-25. _____ O'Hara played ball control on their next drive capped by a 15 yard touchdown run by Raphael Spencer. ______ Shifting to a passing game, the Raiders lost the ball on an interception by Jimmy Clark who returned the ball all the way to the one yard line. _____ Raphael Spencer plunged over the goal line for to final points of the game.

Medal For Fourth Place for Brianna Wright

On November 6th, some members of the Archbishop O'Hara High School Speech/Forensics Team competed with 30 schools at the huge Oak Park High School Varsity Speech Tournament which had 600 entries in individual event categories. _____ For her part in STORYTELLING, Brianna Wright brought home a fourth place medal. _____ Also advancing to their semifinals were Johanna Kelly, Kayla McDowell, Jayel Gant, and Beth Vernon.

O'Hara Freshman Makes All-State in Cross Country

With a time of 20:31.85 Jennifer Gustin, a freshman at Archbishop O'Hara High School, came in 11th in the 2010 MSHSAA Cross Country State Class 2 Championships at Oak Hill Golf Center in Jefferson City on November 6th. _____ Her finish was better than any competing junior and only two other freshman runners had a better time. _____ To be recognized for All-State, runners must finish in the top tewnty-five. _____ In this race, Gustin had an improvement of 25 seconds over her previous best time. _____ Claire Becker, a junior, completed the course in 40th place. _____ In the boys competition, Andy Meyer was 39th and Coach Mike Martin said, "This is the seventh best finish by an O'Hara runner ever for a 39th place." _____ "And for Andy, it was his second best time of the season on the toughest course."

3-A STATE VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS AGAIN

On November 6th, the Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team won the 3A MISSOURI STATE CHAMPIONSHIP for the fourth year in a row. _____ By scores of 25-13 and 25-21, the Celtics outplayed Saint Francis Borgia for the title. ______ The team was led by aggressive offensive shots by Tori Hurtt and Michala Boehm, persistent setups by Lindsey Hanaway, and crisp passings and defensive digs by Janell Jordan, Annie Mahlberg, McKenzie Roberts, and Madison Clark. _____ In the first game, after an early 2-2 score, the Celtics pulled ahead by five at 8-3, then by nine at 14-5, and maintained the lead up to the twelve point victory. _____ The second and deciding game was more competitive with the score tied nine different times. _____ The last time the teams were deadlocked was at 20-20. ______ Following a timeout when Coach Lori Hanaway spelled out the strategy, the team reached the 25 point mark while holding ND to one tally.

3-A STATE VOLLEYBALL ***** FINAL FOUR POOL PLAY

Archbishop O'Hara High School went undefeated in pool play on November 5th at Municipal Auditorium winning all their games. ______ First the Notre Dame Lady Knights from Cape Girardeau lost to the Celtics 25-19 and 25-7. ______ Next the Saint Francis Borgia Bulldogs came up short 25-15 and 25-19. _____ Finally O'Hara won 25-8 and 25-20 over the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats. _____ On November 6th, O'Hara plays Saint Francis Borgia who had the next best record in pool competition.______ They defeated Notre Dame 25-13 and 25-21 and won over Logan 25-20 and 25-13. ______ Notre Dame and Logan split, Notre Dame winning 25-10 and Logan winning 26-17.

Raphael Spencer has scored 24 touchdowns plus 3 two-point conversions for 150 points to lead the team in scoring in 2010. _____ Brandon Dennis has 8 TD's for 48 points and Brett Coatney has 6 TD's for 36 points. ______ Julian Gidley has a career total of 54 kicked extra points; this year he has 25 so far and last year he had 29 at the end of the season. Bryce Scovill (128), Kevin Furey (72), and Joe Palmer (57) hold the top three spots for most career extra points made. _____Brandon Dennis now holds the school record for most yardage gained as a pass receiver in a single game with 194 yards in the District game with Central this year

O'Hara Players on All-Conference Football Team

Led by Raphael Spencer who was named the OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR, a number of O'Hara football players were named to the All West Central Conference teams. _____ Spencer was named as a First Team All Conference running back and to the Second Team as return specialist. _____ Jorge Belcher was selected to the First Team as a linebacker. ______ O'Hara was the only Conference team without a Conference win but had five players on the Second Team. _____ They were Ronnie Jackson punter, Brett Coatney defensive back, Jake Chichuk defensive tackle, Josh Snow offensive guard, and Brandon Dennis tight end. _____ Overlooked although among O'Hara's top ten O'Hara extra point kickers was Julian Gidley who has a career total of 54 as of the Lincoln Prep game; that places him in FOURTH PLACE with only Bryce Scovall, Kevin Furey, and Joe Palmer ahead of him.

O'HARA FOOTBALL TEAM ADVANCES WITH 48-12 WIN

It was Head Coach Jim DeMarea's 100th victory and the third game in a row that the Archbishop O'Hara Celtics scored 48 or more points. _____ The Lincoln Prep Tigers lost to O'Hara on November 3rd 48-12 in the first game of the State playoffs. _____ Four O'Hara touchdowns were scored by Raphael Spencer, two by Brett Coatney, and one by Gabe Spencer. _____ Julian Gidley added six extra point kicks. _____ ______ The game began with the Tigers running off nine plays along with three first downs, mostly behind the efforts of running back Micah Robinson. _____ On the tenth play however Brett Coatney picked up a fumble and returned the ball for a 77 yard TD return. _____ Brandon Dennis picked up another fumble a few plays later and returned the ball to the 10 yard line from which Raphael Spencer scored in two carries. _____ Before the first quarter ended, O'Hara had another touchdown on a 24 yard run by Raphael Spencer. _____ Lincoln controlled the ball for ten plays at the beginning of the second quarter but eventually gave up the ball on downs on the 22 yard line. _____ After Brett Coatney broke loose for a 23 yard gain, Raphael Spencer brought the ball into the endzone from 48 yards away to advance the score to 27-0. _____ The score reached 33-0 on O'Hara's next possession, the points coming from a 24 yard run by Raphael Spencer. ______ Just prior to halftime, the Celtics took over on their own 38 yard line but with only 26 seconds left in the quarter. ____ It was enough as Jake Fortin connected on a long pass play with Jimmy Clark for 47 yards and a 15 yard pass play for the score to Raphael Spencer. ______ The 41-0 margin put the second half of the game on a running clock. _____ Gabe Spencer ran in a touchdown for an 18 yard TD in the third quarter. _____ O'Hara provided the rest of the squad playing time throughout the fourth quarter. _____ Lincoln was able to get on the scoreboard twice, once on a short run by Micah Robinson and then on a 38 yard pass play from Trevante Dixon to Daquan Jackson. ____ After each of these touchdowns, the Tigers attemted two-point conversions but were denied.

O'Hara Completes Soccer Season With Overtime Loss

Kevin Hogan and John Allard scored the O'Hara Celtics' soccer team's final two goals of the season as they tied Lutheran before losing 3-2 in the Class 1 District 14 game._____ The Celtics were down 2-0 with ten minutes remaining in the contest and managed to tie the game to send it into overtime. ______ Lutheran goes on to play Barstow for the District title.

Four O'Hara volleyball players made FIRST TEAM ALL DISTRICT: Madison Clark, Lindsey Hanaway, Tori Hurtt, and Michala Boehm. Making the SECOND TEAM were Lindsay Beachner, Trisha Wankum, Annie Mahlberg, and Janell Jordan. _____ The fantastic trio of Lindsey Hanaway, Michala Boehm, and Tori Hurtt from the Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team made the First Team All West Central Conference and First Team All Regional. _____ Madison Clark was named to the Second Team All Conference and to the Second Team All Regional. _____ Janell Jordan was selected to the Second Team All Conference and Annie Mahlberg is an Honorable Mention for the All Conference Team.

THREE QUALIFY FOR STATE IN CROSS COUNTRY

Although Archbishop O'Hara High School was unable to field a complete team in cross country, three runners were among the top fifteen in Class 2 District 8 at Swope Park and qualify to compete in State. _____ Jennifer Gustin was 4th and Claire Becker just made it with 15th place in the girls' competition while Andy Meyers was 9th in his race. _____ Andy Meyers' time was 18:17 and the top runner came in at 16:23. ______ Jennifer Gustin was timed at 21:04 and Claire Becker had 21:55. ______ Teamwise Saint Pius won the boys and Lawson won the girls.

O'Hara Reaches Final Four Again in Volleyball

The defending State Champion O'Hara Celtics won their first round of Sectionals 25-9 & 25-12 over the Cameron Dragons on October 30 at Archbishop O'Hara High School. ______ Then after the Saint Pius X Warriors won 25-20 & 25-15 over the Odessa Bulldogs to advance to play O'Hara, the Celtics won the Sectionals with scores of 25-12 and 25-18. _____ The State Championship games are scheduled for November 5th and 6th. _____ The other three schools making up the Final Four are Logan-Rogersville, Saint Francis Borgia, and Notre Dame Cape Girardeau.

O'HARA WINS FOOTBALL DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The Archbishop O'Hara Celtics won the Class 3 District 13 Championship on October 28th by a score of 50-8 over the Central Blue Eagles. _____ After taking a six point lead in the first quarter on a 32 yard run by Raphael Spencer, the Celtics exploded for 32 points in the second quarter. _____ On the very first play of the second quarter, Jake Fortin completed a pass to Brandon Dennis for a 65 yard touchdown. ______ Raphael Spencer ran for a two-point conversion to make the score 14-0. _____ O'Hara surprised Central with an onside kick and Tony Darling recovered for O'Hara to set up a scoring drive. _____ Taking eleven plays, the Celtics upped the score to 22-0 on a 9 yard catch by Jimmy Clark and a two-point conversion catch by Raphael Spencer. _____ The Eagles drove down to the O'Hara 4 yard line before yielding the ball on owns. _____ Two long passes resulted in O'Hara's next TD, Jake Fortin completed a pass for 62 yards to Jimmy Clark and a 34 yard touchdown pass to Brandon Dennis. ____ Tanner Hull ran in a two-pointer to make the score 28-0. _____ The Celtic defense backed the Eagles from their 21 yard line to the 8 yard line to develop a punting situation. _____ However, the punt never materialized when a bad snap resulted in a two point safety, the ball going out of the endzone. _____ Before the quarter came to an end, both teams suffered fumbles, but with time running out for the first half, Jake Fortin again completed a pass to Brandon Dennis and this one covered 77 yards for O'Hara's 38th point of the game. _____ _____ The second half of the game was played with a running clock since the margin of the score was over 35. _____ Raphael Spencer broke away for a 26 yard touchdown run to end the third quarter at 44-0. _____ Both teams scored fourth quarter touchdowns, O'Hara getting theirs on a 13 yard run by Brett Coatney and Central getting eight points on a 72 yard pass play from Antonio Canaday to Trey Jensen with Richard Smith running for the two-point conversion. _____ O'Hara had 465 net yards to Central's 149. _____ Raphael Spencer gained 129 yards rushing and Brandon Dennis gained 192 yards on four pass receptions. _____ Jake Fortin completed half of his fourteen pass attempts for 262 yards and moved into the top ten O'Hara passers for a single season to 8th place with a total of 902 yards, accomplishing this feat in just nine games since the Westport game was cancelled. _____ Brandon Dennis reached a three-way tie for 11th place among the top ten pass receivers in a single season with 21 receptions. _____ In addition, with 194 yards, he surpassed the school record of 174 yards by a pass receiver in a single game set by Matt Morrison and tied the school record of scoring three touchdowns as a pass receiver in a single game. _____ Jake Fortin also tied the school record set by T. J. White for throwing four TD passes in a single game._____ The Celtics enter the post season with a 3-6 record and will host Lincoln Prep in the first game of the Sectionals on Wednesday, November 3rd. _____ In District 14, Lincoln Prep won a 36-6 game with East on Thursday.

Four O'Hara volleyball players have been invited to be among the twelve Missouri seniors in the November 14th annual MO-KAN game scheduled to be played at Avila University. _____ They are Tori Hurtt, Lindsey Hanaway, Michala Boehm, and Janell Jordan.

O'HARA WINS VOLLEYBALL DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics volleyball team won the Class 3A District 13 Championship by outscoring the Pembroke Hill Raiders 25-13 and 25-18 on Octbober 27th at Center High. _____ Impressive kills by Tori Hurtt, Janell Jordan , and Michala Boehm along with precise setups by Lindsey Hanaway were more than the Raiders could handle. ______ Saving digs by Annie Mahlberg, Tricia Wankum, and Madison Clark added to Pembroke Hill's frustration. _____ In the first game, the Raiders looked confident when they pulled ahead 4-1 but that did not last long. ______ The Celtics tied the score at 5-5 and never again were behind the rest of the evening. _____ Although the Celtics led throughout the second game, the Raiders did have a glimmer of hope when they were only down by four at 21-17, but that was as close as they were to get. ______ O'Hara's 25th point was an ace served by Lindsey Hanaway. _____ Selected to the All-District First Team were Madison Clark, Michala Boehm, Lindsey Hanaway, and Tori Hurtt. _____ Making the Second Team All-District were Tricia Wankum, Janell Jordan, and Annie Mahlberg. _____ O'Hara is hosting the Sectional Tournament on Saturday, October 30th and will play Cameron at 3:00 PM. ______ The Sectional Finals is scheduled for 5:30 PM.

O'HARA SQUEAKS BY CENTER IN SOCCER GAME

In a rather long but dramatic soccer game, the O'Hara Celtics got by Center with the result coming from Anthony Scasseletti's penalty goal after the two teams had tied 1-1 following two 40 minute halves and two 10 minute overtimes. _____ In the shootout, both teams matched kicks for a 7-7 standoff until Scasseletti's decider. _____ The Celtics ended their regular season 4-13-1 going into their first District game on November 2nd against Kansas City Lutheran at Barstow. ____ Julian Gidley had O'Hara's lone goal in regulation time.

The Archbishop O'Hara High School defending State Champions in 3-A Missouri volleyball plays Pembroke Hill on October 27 for the District 13 Championship at the Center High gym at 5:30 PM. _____ O'Hara advanced to the finals with a 25-0 and 25-3 win over Cristo Rey while Pembroke Hill reached the finals by downing Lincoln Prep 25-8 and 25-5. _____ Prior to these contests, Cristo Rey had eliminated Center 22-25, 25-16, and 25-13 and Lincoln Prep was victorious over Central 25-10 and 25-17.

YOUNG CELTICS ARE SPEECH WINNERS

In the Park Hill South Novice Speech/Debate Tournament, every participating Celtic advanced to semifinals or finals! _____ There were 22 schools in the event. _____ In Duet Acting, Beth Vernon and Andy Vernon reached Third Place. _____ Fourth Place in the same event was earned by the team of Hailey Jordan and Kierra Jackson. _____ Beth Vernon also took a Fifth Place in Poetry Interpretation. _____ Semifinals were reached by Hailey Jordan in Poetry Interpretation and by Cynthia Ononye in Prose Interpretation. _____ Taking a Quarter Finals Trophy were the public forum debate team of Cydnee Reese and Jayla Smith who won all four of their preliminary rounds.

Cross Country: Six Celtics Win Medals

On October 23rd, six cross country runners from Archbishop O'Hara competed in the Saint Mary's Invitional and all six finished high enough to earn medals in their races. _____ Jennifer Gustin and Claire Becker led the way with medals for first and second places; the two runners' times were within one second of each other. _____ Andy Meyer was the best of the O'Hara runners in the boys competition with a fourth place. _____ Although well down the competitive line, medals were given for 21st place to Mackenzie Shelton, 27th place to Dakota Defreece, and 35th place to Alex Wagner. ______ Eight schools were represented with Holden winning both the boys and girls. ______Fifty-nine boys competed while thirty-six girls were in the running.

CELTICS SEEDED #1 IN DISTRICT 13 VOLLEYBALL

The defending State Champions in Class 3 Missouri volleyball, the Celtics of O'Hara, were seeded Number 1 in District 13 and had a bye for the first round. ______ Pembroke Hill, seeded Number 2, also started with a bye. ______ On October 25, Center (seeded 4) lost to Cristo Rey (seeded 5) so Cristo Rey plays O'Hara on October 26 at 5 PM. ______ Meanwhile in the other bracket Lincoln Prep (seeded 3) beat Central (seeded 6) and will face Prembroke Hill. _____ The District Championship is scheduled for 5:30 PM on October 27 at the Center High School gym.

O'Hara To Play Central for District Football Championship

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtic football team will play the Central Blue Eagles on a Thursday Evening game October 28th. _____ Having already won a 48-28 game with the Pembroke Hill Raiders and with Westport dropped from competition, the Celtics' game with Central will likely end with O'Hara on top in their District. _____ Pembroke Hill was the victor of a shutout over Central on Friday, October 22.

O'HARA UNDEFEATED IN WCC VOLLEYBALL

October 21st was senior night for the Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team as the Celtics completed their West Central Conference games undefeated, downing the Clinton Cardinals 25-7 and 25-10. _____ Five seniors playing in their season's final home game who were honored with the their parents were Tori Hurtt, Michala Boehm, Lindsey Hanaway, Janell Jordan, and Emily Tyler. _____ In the first game, the Celtics built up a 9-0 lead and coasted to an easy win. _____ After an early 3-3 tie, they widened the margin of the second game at a leisurely pace. ______ District games are scheduled for October 26 and 27 to be played at Center High School.

Two O'Hara Cross Country Runners Selected to All-Conference Team

By placing 6th and 8th in the West Central Conference Championship on October 19th, Jennifer Gustin and Claire Becker were named to the Second Team All-Conference. _____ Three runners on the boys varsity team registered their best running times: Andy Meyer (17:48, 12th place), Dakota Defreece (19:54, 26th place) and Alex Wagner (20:38, 28th place). _____ Also competing in the Meet were Amy Gaston (23rd) and Mackenzie Shelton (27th).

TWO MEDAL WINNERS IN SPEECH

At the Lee's Summit Varsity Speech Tournament on October 16th with seventeen schools competing, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Speech/Forensics Team had two medalists. _____ Johanna Kelly was 4th in Original Oratory and Brianna Wright was 5th in Storytelling. _____ Beth Vernon came close advancing to the semifinals in Poetry. _____ Also receiving some superior ballots were Kierra Jackson and Cynthia Ononye in their individual competitions.

O'Hara Wins First District Football Game 48-28

Six touchdowns (one for 53 yards in the fourth quarter) by Raphael Spencer was too much for Pembroke Hill as they lost to the O'Hara Celtics 48-28 on October 15th in the first round of District football games. _____ O'Hara's next District opponent was to be Westport but the game was cancelled after the school closed its doors this past summer. _____ The Celtics play on the following Thursday against Central. _____ _____A pass from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis for a 6 yard TD in the first quarter gave O'Hara an early lead; the Celtics covered 68 yards in ten plays for the only points scored in the first period. _____ A 32 yard pass from Jacob Gershon to David Kipke four minutes into the second quarter put the Raiders on the board, but David Kipke's extra point kick failed and the Celtics had a slim 7-6 lead. _____ Julian Gidley's extra point kick made the difference and he would continue to be successful in all but one of the remaining extra points of the game. _____ Two touchdowns were scored on runs of 15 yards and 8 yards by Raphael Spencer before halftime at which time the score became 21-6. _____ The Raiders were able to tie up the score at 21-21 at the beginning of the third quarter with two TD's, one was a 7 yard run by Marquelle Smith and the other a 3 yard pass from Gershon to Kipke. _____ Following this first touchdown Marquelle Smith ran in a two-point conversion and Kipke kicked the extra point after the second one. ______ Spencer went back to work to break the tie scoring on a 47 yard run before the third quarter was over, and adding an 18 yard TD run at the start of the fourth quarter. _____ Pembroke Hill narrowed the margin to 35-28 on a short 4 yard touchdown run by Dylen Sen, but that wes the end of the Raiders' scoring. _____ Spencer was in the endzone twice more on runs of 53 yards and 4 yards beore the game came to an end. _____ _____ Spencer was again among the area's rushing leaders with 294 yards to go with his six touchdowns. _____ O'HARA SCHOOL TOP TEN: Raphael Spencer has a career total of 2938 yards and is now in second place to Matt Patterson who hold the school record of 5396 yard. ______ Spencer is also second in career scoring with 301 with Patterson holding the #1 spot with 346. _____ Junior Julian Gidley is now tied with Shawn Geraghty for 6th place in most career extra points made with a total of 48.

On October 12th, the Archbishop O'Hara High School volleyball team were victorious when they hosted and won over the Shawnee Mission East Lancers 25-15 and 25-18. _____ On the following day, after taking the first match 25-6 with Center, the Celtics shut out the Yellowjackets 25-0 with Michala Boehm serving for all the O'Hara points.

Four Celtics Names to All-Conference Softball Team

Andi Davis and Kellie Bachkora were name to the First Team All West Central Conference as infielders. _____ Named to the Second Team were Allison Seck as a utility player and Natalie Berigan as an outfielder.

TWO CELTICS EARN SPEECH MEDALS

Archbishop O'Hara High School competed with eighteen schools at the Blue Springs High School Varsity Speech Tournament and had two medalists. _____ In Original Oratory Speaking Johanna Kelly took 6th place and in Storytelling Kayla McDowell also placed 6th. _____ Paige Bush did win some superior ballots while Cynthia Ononye and Beth Vernon just missed advancing to the semifinals.

Coach Mike Martin reported the following five cross country runners and their places in the races they were in: Jennifer Gustin 4th, Blake Hudon 14th, Andy Meyer 15th, Amy Gaston 26th, and Alex Wagner 54th. For Wagner, his time was his personal best. The competition was at Artesian Park in Clinton.

CENTER TOPS O'HARA 49-32 IN HOMECOMING FOOTBALL CONTEST

In a wild scoring game between the O'Hara Celtics and the Center Yellowjackets, Center won 49-32. _____ It was Center's Homecoming game and insured a Co-Championship in the West Central Conference with Warrensburg, both teams with 4-1 records. _____ The Yellowjackets scored on a 12 yard pass play from Harold Mabin to Oren Lee. ______ After the Celtics moved the ball to midfield where they had to punt, the Yellowjackets moved the score to 14-0 on a 65 yard pass by Mabin and Lee. ______ For the remainder of the game, this margin of two touchdowns was maintained as each team would score five apiece. ______ On O'Hara's next possession, Ronnie Jackson punted to Center's 11 yard line. _____ However a penalty against O'Hara called for a rekick and instead of punting again, the Celtics sprung Raphael Spencer free around left end for a 36 yard TD run. _____ Before the first quarter ended, Alexander Taylor ran for a 35 yard TD to start the second quarter 21-7. _____ O'Hara mounted a drive from their own 26 yard line to eventually score on an 8 yard run by Raphael Spencer. _____ In the drive Jake Fortin completed passes to Brandon Dennis for 9 yards, to D. J. Griffin for 15 yards, and to Jimmy Clark for 9 yards; Fortin also scrambled for 14 yards to keep the drive alive. _____ A 40 yard touchdown pass from Mabin to Evan Hancock increased the Yellowjackets' lead to 28-14, and during the Celtics' next drive, a fumble recovery by Ronnie Hill set up another Center score. _____ Again it was Mabin to Lee, this time covering 36 yards and providing the Homecoming team with a 35-14 halftime advantage. _____ In the third quarter, Center was on the board first with a Mabin to Lee 15 yard pass and a large 42-14 score. _____ O'Hara got some points back when Jake Fortin completed a pass to Brandon Dennis in a TD play that consumed 41 yards. _____ Before the third quarter came to a close, the Celtics stopped the Yellowjackets at midfield where the ball was given up on downs. _____ The Celtics marched down for a touchdown at the first part of the fourth quarter with Raphael Spencer taking it in from 16 yards out to bring the score to 42-26. _____ Center's final touchdown was after a 15 yard run by Hector Arrebota brought the ball to the goal line and fumbled and recovered by Jay Carter in the end zone. _____ With five minues remaining in the game, O'Hara scored its final touchdown on a 10 yard run by Raphael Spencer. _____ Kilvert Martinez was successful on all seven of his extra points for the Yellowjackets while Julian Gidley made two, had two blocked, and the Celtics failed in their two-point attempt. _____ Center built up a 35-14 halftime score, but the Celtics outpointed the Yellowjackets 18-14 during the second half of the game. ______ Both teams had over 425 total net yards but O'Hara had 22 first downs to Center's 18. _____ Raphael Spencer gained 186 yards on 22 carries for an 8.5 yard average per run. _____ Jake Fortin completed half of his 16 pass attempts for 215 yards. _____D. J. Griffin caught six passes for 68 yards and Brandon Dennis caught four for 65 yards. _____ Raphael Spencer's four touchdowns boosted his total for the year to eleven and he has scored 74 of O'Hara's total 146 points this season. _____ He is third in O'Hara's school record in career rushing with 2,644 yards (J. R. Brown 1980-1982 is presently in second place with 2,805 yards). _____ Julian Gidley's two extra point conversions places him in 9th place with 42 (John Cosentino 1981-1983 is presently in 8th place with 43).

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics volleyball team were matched with Saint James ranked tops in the Nation on October5th. ______ Saint James won 25-15 and 25-18 in the competitive contest.

GUSTON WINS IN ST PAUL CC INVITATIONAL

Coach Mike Martin extended his congratulations to freshman Jennifer Gustin on winning her cross country race at the Saint Paul Invitational at the beginning of October. _____ Other medalists at the meet included Claire Becker, Amy Gaston, and McKenzie Shelton. _____ In the boys division, Blake Hudon had a third place finish. _____ Others who won medals were Dakota Defreece, Ronald Clark, and Alex Wagner.

Celtics Football Undefeated in October

Winning for the first time in six games of the 2010 football season 42-30 on October 1st, the Archbishop O'Hara High School football team started off the month on a good note. _____ Here are some impressive items. _____ In the game with University Academy, the Celtics had to rally from a two touchdown deficit when they were held scoreless throughout the entire first quarter. ______ Only the spectacular 90 yard run by Raphael Spencer contributed to the scoring in the second quarter. ______ The Griffins led through the entire first half of the game. _____ O'Hara's 42 points in the game was the most the Celtics scored in any of their games; the previous high was 26 against Grandview which was an overtime game. _____ O'Hara had 425 total yards to UA's 270. _____ O'Hara had 16 first downs to UA's 18. _____ O'Hara had only one completed pass in four attempts, but it was a TD pass. _____ Three of O'Hara's five quarterback sacks came via Raphael Spencer ( the other two were by Ronnie Jackson & the duo of Jorge Belcher with Jake Chichuk). _____ O'Hara punted once in the game and it was a short 14 yarder. _____ O'Hara had one interception and it was by D, J. Griffin who returned the ball 23 yards. _____ Boosted by their 21 third quarter points, the Celtics have outpointed their opponents 37-12; it is the only quarter in which O'Hara bested their opposition. _____ Raphael Spencer has scored 8 touchdowns for the Celtics along with a two-point conversion to lead in the individual scoring with 50 points; four of his touchdowns came in the game with University Academy. _____ CAREER SCHOOL RECORDS: Raphael Spencer is 3rd in rushing with 2,458 yards and is 2nd in total points scored with 241. _____ Julian Gidley is 9th in most extra points made by kicking with 40. _____ WEST CENTRAL CONFERECNCE : Tied for first place with 3-1 records are Center, Saint Pius X, and Warrensburg. _____ Smith-Cotton (3-2) and Clinton (1-4) have completed their Conference games. _____ The only remaining Conference games are Center vs O'Hara and Warrensburg vs Saint Pius X. _____ If Center wins their game, they will be Co-Champs with the winner of the other game. ______ If Center loses to O'Hara, the winner of the Warrensburg-Saint Pius game will be Champs.

O'HARA WINS HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME 42-30

A 90 yard touchdown run from scrimmage highlighted the O'Hara Homecoming victory 42-30 on October 1st. _____ And the run was by Raphael Spencer who, at halftime, was announced as the Homecoming King along with Homecoming Queen Alex Moran. _____ The first quarter belonged to the University Academy Griffins as the Celtics were shut out 12-0. _____ Quarterback Dimonic McKinzy scrambled for a 10 yard TD and D'montai Clarkson ran for a 5 yard score while the Celtics waited for the second quarter to score their first points. _____ Raphael's 90 yarder was the only touchdown scored within the second quarter. _____ Julian Gidley's first of six conversions made the score 12-7 at the half. _____ The Celtics' offense woke up to three third quarter touchdowns while yielding one to the Griffins. _____ Jake Fortin passed 44 yards to Brandon Dennis to put O'Hara ahead for the first time 14-12. _____ Raphael Spencer scored on a 30 yard run to extend the Celtic lead to 21-12. _____ Dimonic McKinzy's 29 yard pass to Brandon Bowden narrowed the score to 21-18, but Raphael Spencer answered with a 3 yard TD run to bring the end of the third quarter to a ten point margin 28-18. ______ Both squads scored twice in the fourth quarter, but as in the earlier scoring, O'Hara was successful on all of their kicked extra points while the Griffins failed in each of their attempts. _____ The Griffins got their two TD's of the fourth quarter on passes, first to Bryson Winfrey for 10 yards and then to Kalib Gilmore for a lengthy 58 yard gain. _____ The Celtics' scores of the final quarter were on a 38 yard run by Brett Coatney and a 13 yard run by Raphael Spencer. _____ The win for O'Hara was their first of the season. _____ Raphael Spencer gained over 240 yards rushing in the game which was among the top five reported in the Kansas City area.

O'Hara Tennis Team is Seeded Fourth

The O'Hara girls tennis team will compete in District play starting on October 4th. ______ The team is seeded behind Notre Dame de Sion, Barstow, and Grain Valley. _____ The first opponent for the Celtics is Center seeded fifth. _____ Grandview is also in the tournament seeded sixth. ____ Tennis finals are on October 6th.

TWO CELTICS REACH SECTIONALS IN GIRLS GOLF

In District 5, O'Hara's first ever girls golf squad had two athletes qualify for Sectionals. _____ Shooting 115 at Shirkey Golf Course at Richmond, Mackenzie Magwire earned all District honors taking 15th place. _____ Also qualifying for Sectionals was Olivia Wright who finished 24th (one of the top 15 individuals not on a qualifying team). ______ Sectional competition will be at Paradise Pointe in Excelsior Springs on October 6th. _____ Laura Eagle is the Archbishop O'Hara Girls Golf Coach.

FOOTBALL: O'HARA 7, ST PIUS 14

For the third time this season, the Archbishop O'Hara football team lost a close game. ____ In their first two games, it took Grandview overtime to top the Celtics and it took extra points for Clinton to come out on top. _____ On September 24, the Saint Pius X Warriors had to hold on to survive a late O'Hara rally 14-7. _____ In the first quarter, the Warriors scored on a quarterback sneak by Grant Gavin and in the second quarter, Anthony Zicarelli ran for a 5 yard score. _____ With Caleb Baker adding the extra points, Saint Pius was able take a two touchdown lead into halftime. ____ But that was the only scoring the Celtics would allow as O'Hara narrowed the lead to seven points by scoring a fourth quarter TD on a 3 yard run by Raphael Spencer with just over four minutes remaining in the game. _____ Julian Gidley kicked the extra point._____ With two and a half minutes remaining, O'Hara had their last possession on the 43 yard line. _____ The Celtics were able to advance the ball to the 17 yard line before giving up the ball on downs and the Warriors were victors in a close game. _____ Raphael Spencer ran for over 100 yards in the game and D. J. Griffin caught three passes for 59 yards. _____ Jorge Belcher had eight tackles and a quarterback sack. _____ Lowell Thomas halted a Warrior drive with an intereption. _____ As for O'Hara school career records, Raphael Spencer is 2nd in scoring with 217 points and Julian Gidley is 10th in most kicked extra points made with 46.

Two Named to All Conference Girls Golf

McKenzie Magwire and Olivia Wright from Archbishop O'Hara High School were named to the All West Central Conference Golf Team on September 23rd. _____ Girls golf is in its first year at O'Hara and is coached by Laura Eagle. _____ In the recent West Central Conference Girls Golf Tournament, Olivia Wright and Ciara Bazemore tied for fifth place.

TWO MEDAL AT SMITHVILLE INVITATIONAL

Jennifer Gustin was 7th and Claire Becker was 12th in the Smithville Cross Country Invitational on September 21st winning medals. O'Hara only had four runners, not enough to field a team; the other two were Amy Gaston (25th) and Mackenzie Shelton (31st). _____ In the boys varsity, the Celtics had only four runners also. They were Andy Meyer (39th), Alex Wagner (54th), Dakota Defreece (55th) and Corbett MbKinney (59th).

An Easy Win in Volleyball For The Celtics

O'Hara won 25-0 and 25-3 on September 20. The Center Yellowjackets were the Celtics' opponents.

O'HARA TIES AN UNDEFEATED TEAM IN SOCCER

Coming from behind, the O'Hara soccer team managed to tie Warrensburg 1-1 on September 20. _____ The Warrensburg Tigers were 5-0 going into the contest while O'Hara was 2-3. _____ Nate Lacalilade gave the Tigers a 1-0 halftime edge, but Julian Gidley slipped in the tying goal in the second half for the Celtics. _____ West Central Conference games do not go into overtimes nor shootouts as tournament games do, so the two defensive squads settled for a tie. _____ This was O'Hara's first Conference game of the season.

Football: O'Hara 14 Smith-Cotton 31

The O'Hara Celtics football team led Smith-Cotton until 1:10 left in the first half, but couldn't regain the lead the rest of the game as the Sedalia Tigers went on to win 31-14. _____ With their first possession, the Celtics went up by a touchdown and extra point. _____ Raphael Spencer broke through the Tiger defense for a 56 yard TD and Julian Gidley tagged on the extra point. _____ It took the Tigers ten plays, but they knotted the score on a 12 yard run by Raymon Arias and an extra point by Jacqueline Greer. _____ The Celtics went back on top 14-7 with Raphael Spencer returning the Tiger kickoff for a 96 yard return. _____ The score held up until near halftime when the Tigers scored on a 48 yard run by Dominque Smith. _____ Josh Snow blocked the extra point attempt, so the Celtics held a slim 14-13 edge. _____ One of O'Hara's eight fumbles in the contest set up a Tiger TD before the first half ended. _____ DarianWeeks took the ball in from four yards out and Dominique Smith passed to Shae Buckner for the two-point conversion. ______ The halftime score was 21-14. _____ Neither team scored in the third quarter although a 29 yard pass from Raphael Spencer to Brandon Dennis appeared to close the gap, but the touchdown was called back due to a penalty. ______ The Tigers rounded out the scoring with a touchdown run for 29 yards by Raymon Arias and a field goal by Jaqueline Greer.

FOUR CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS REACH PERSONAL BESTS

In the Platte County Invitational on September 16th, four O'Hara cross country runners bettered their previous high running times: Alex Wagner, Dakota Defreece, Corbett McKinney, and Jennifer Gustin. ______ Four also won medals at the meet. In varsity competition Jennifer Gustin took 15th and Claire Becker was in at 19th for the girls, while Blake Hudon crossed the finish line 26th for the boys. In a non-varsity run, Alex Wagner won a 9th place medal. ____ The course was at Platte Ridge Park

Holden Overwhelmed by O'Hara 10-0 in Soccer

On September 14th, the O'Hara soccer team scored ten times against Holden before the game was stopped with the mercy rule. _____ Senior Matthew Shelton and freshman Colton Ludwick had three Celtic goals apiece. _____ Julian Gidley, Amory Gunter, Ryan Wald, and John Tyler had individual scores. _____ Six players registered assists: Matthew Shelton, Colton Ludwick, Anthony Scassalletti, Mat McInerny, Pay Berney, and Jason Jaurquio.

O'Hara Volleyball Team Win Third Place in MO-KAN Consolation

O'Hara, the defending 3-A Missouri Volleyball Champions, defeated Saint Teresa's 25-10 and 25-20 to win the the third place trophy at the MO-KAN Invitational on September 11th. _____ The overall winner of the Tournament was Saint James, defending Class 4-A Kansas Champions, whose record went to 9-0. _____ In pool play, O'Hara lost to Blue Springs, winning the first game 25-20, but then dropping the next two 22-25 and 18-25. _____ However, in the playoffs the Celtics were undefeated, winning 25-9 and 25-12 over Lawrence Free State as well as 25-16 and 25-19 over Blue Valley.

LIGHTNING HALTS O'HARA WARRENSBURG FOOTBALL GAME

The score of the September 10th football game was Warrensburg 28 O'Hara 0 when lightning put a stop to the activity with 6:21 on the clock before halftime. ______ The Warrensburg Tigers benefitted from touchdowns on runs by Andrew Frencken for 14 yards and 8 yards, a 24 yard pass play from Layton Moore to Nick Dandurand, and an 82 yard interception return by Alex Kostas. _____ O'Hara's lone big-gainer was a pass from Jake Fortin to Brandon Dennis for 34 yards.

Softball: O'Hara 3 Warrensburg 2

The Lady Celtics softball team handed the Warrensburg Tigers their first loss of the early season 3-2 with Allison Seck pitching for O'Hara. _____ Kellie Bachkora was 3 for 3 and batted in all three of the O'Hara runs. _____Carson Burns was 2 for 3 and Andi Davis scored the deciding run of the game. _____ Notable defensive plays were two leaping catches by Natalie Berigan and Payton Buseck.

O'HARA IS 7th IN CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

At Frick Park on September 9th, the O'Hara boys cross country team was seventh among eleven teams in the Oak Grove Invitational with 200 points. _____ Smithville won with a score of 48 followed by Platte County, Richmond, Pleasant Hill, Odessa, and Pembroke Hill. _____ The teams behind the Celtics with scores over 200 were Oak Grove, Marshall, Barstow, and Boonville. _____ None of the O'Hara runners were among the top five finishers, and the girls squad did not have enough runners to field a complete team. _____ Medalists included Blake Hudon, Claire Becker, and Jennifer Gustin (who had her own personal best time). _____ Non-medalists who registered their own personal bests were Corbett McKinney and Alex Wagner.

O'Hara Soccer Team Does Well Against Undefeated Oak Grove

Matt Shelton scored twice for the Archbishop O'Hara High School soccer team while Zach Leamon put in three goals for Oak Grove on September 9th. _____ The 3-2 contest kept Oak Grove undefeated in three games while the Celtics dropped to 1-4.

VOLLEYBALL TEAM WIN TWO HOME CONFERNCE GAMES

On September 7th, the Archbishop O'Hara High School defending State Champion Volleyball Team won 25-5 and 25-5 in their West Central Conference game with Smith-Cotton of Sedalia in the O'Hara gym. _____ In the first game, the Celtics led the Tigers by only 8-4 before racking up 10 consecutive points, and in the second game, the Celtics jumped to a 10-0 advantage before the Tigers got on the scoreboard. ______ On September 9th, the Celtics beat the Saint Pius Warriors 25-12 and 15-15. ______ In the first game only six points separated the two teams when they reached 18-12, but the Celtics scored the next seven points of the contest. ______ After O'Hara got the early lead at 3-2 in the second game, they remained ahead the rest of the way.

Some Stats After the O'Hara-Clinton Football Game

After the close 27-25 football win By the Clinton Cardinals over the O'Hara Celtics, some stats emerged that may be of interest. _____ Raphael Spencer quarterbacked the first Celtic series and completed his only pass attempt for 34 yards and a touchdown. _____He also led the running attack for O'Hara the rest of the game averaging 6.5 yards per carry as he gained 155 yards on 24 attempts. _____ The only other Celtic that contributed much to the rushing yards was Brett Coatney averaging 6.0 yards with 60 yards on 10 attempts. _____ Spencer's 1888 total yards in his career at O'Hara places him 6th in the school's history behind Matt Patterson, J. R. Brown, Mike Brown, Jesse Thomas, and Jeff Brown. _____ The 1454 yards gained in last year's season has him 5th best for a single season. _____ He is second only to Matt Patterson in career points scored and presently holds the top spot for a single season which he attained last year with 179 points. _____ In the game with Clinton, Jake Chichuk and Tanner Hull each had a quarterback sack, Brandon Dennis had an interception, and Josh Snow recovered a fumble. _____ After the second week of the season, the standings of the teams within the West Central Conference are Clinton 1-0, Warrensburg 1-0, Smith-Cotton 1-1, Saint Pius 1-1, O'Hara 0-1, and Center 0-1.

SIX MEDALISTS IN CROSS COUNTRY FOR O'HARA

Coach Mike Martin assisted by Coach Ann Adams had eleven O'Hara cross country runners participate in the Annual Saint Mary's Invitational at William Jewel with six athletes finishing high enough for medals. _____ O'Hara was unable to field a complete team for the various races and thus did not come up with team scores. ______ Claire Becker was 14th in the girls varsity while Blake Hudon and Andy Meyer were 17th and 25th respectively in the boys varsity to be among the top 35 for receiving medals. _____ Also running on the varsity level but not high enough for medals were Amy Gaston and McKenzie Shelton for the girls and Dakota Defreece and Ronald Clark for the boys. _____ Sam Baird was the only Celtic runner competing in the JV race and came in 43rd. ______ All three of the freshman entered in the First-Year Runners competition won medals. _____Among the girls, Jennifer Gustin came in 2nd and in the boys race, Corbett McKinney was 7th and Alex Wagner 15th.

O'Hara Loses Another Cliffhanger by Two Points

Clinton scored a deciding touchdown with less than a minute left in the game and won 27-25 on September 3. _____ Trenton Perry took an 11 yard TD pass from Dylan Stadter and Gabe Suthoff kicked the extra point as the Cardinals came from behind to erase a 25-20 O'Hara advantage. _____ Clinton opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 16 yard pass from Dylan Stadter to Collin Garvin and O'Hara matched the six pointer on a 34 yard pass from Raphael Spencer to Brandon Dennis. _____ Both teams failed to make their extra points. _____ The Cardinals scored first in the second quarter when Gabe Suthoff ran the ball in from five yards out after which the Celtics answered with a 32 yard pass play from Jake Fortin to D. J. Griffin. _____ Whereas the Cardinals failed in their two-point conversion attempt, Julian Gidley kicked the extra point for O'Hara to give the home team a 13-12 halftime edge. _____ O'Hara scored the only touchdown of the third quarter, a six yard run by Brett Coatney giving the O'Hara team a 19-12 lead into the final quarter. _____ The tiring Celtic defense nearly stopped the Cardinal scoring drive at the start of the fourth quarter, but on a fourth down play with the ball on the 26 yard line, Gabe Suthoff caught a TD pass from Dylan Stadter; Suthoff also ran in the two-point conversion to put the Cardinals up by one 20-19. _____ Behind the running of Raphael Spencer and Brett Coatney, the Celtics pulled ahead on an eight yard run by Raphael Spencer, but the team was unable to click on a two-point conversion.

The Archbishop O'Hara soccer team went 1-2 in the Lee's Summit Invitational Tournament before Labor Day, defeating William Chrisman 3-1 but losing shutout games to Saint Thomas Aquinas 10-0 and Lee's Summit West 4-0. ______ Scoring O'Hara's goals were Matt Shelton scoring two and Kevin Hogan one.

The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtic football team displayed quite an arsenal to tie the Grandview Bulldogs 20-20 in regulation time in their season opener. _____ Using a safety, a field goal, a one-point kicked conversion, a two-point conversion, along with two touchdowns, the Celtics were able to total their twenty points. ______ The Bulldogs got their twenty via three touchdowns missing two attempted one-point conversions and scoring a two-point conversion on a run. ____ After the teams moved into overtime, the Bulldogs scored eight points on a 25 yard run and a two-point conversion, both by Darion Moore. _____ The Celtics tried to match this one-man performance with a Jake Fortin 25 yard pass to Brandon Dennis, but Raphael Spencer was stopped short on O'Hara's two-point conversion attempt. _____ _____ O'Hara scored first in the evening's game. Quarterback Ryan Lee was tackled in the end zone by Tanner Hull to give the Celtics a 2-0 lead which held up all the way until a minute before halftime. _____ An 18 yard pass from Ryan Lee to Romey Reaws gave the Bulldogs a 6-2 halftime advantage. _____ When O'Hara reached the 6 yard line in the third quarter, Julian Gidley brought the score to within one point with a field goal. _____ Following this the Bulldogs scored on an 80 yard drive; after seven running plays mostly by Darion Moore, Travis McMillan caught a 23 yard touchdown pass from Ryan Lee. ______ Jordan Hood's extra point kick was blocked by Jake Chickuk to hold the score at 12-5. _____ Bolstered by a 45 yard breakaway run by Brett Coatney and a 17 yard pass play from Jake Fortin to D. J. Griffin, the Celtics came up with their first TD of the day on a 3 yard plunge by Brett Coatney. ______Julian Gidley's extra point tied the score at 12-12. _____ The Bulldogs took an eight point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a 3 yard run and a twopoint conversion by Darion Moore. ______ At the end of the fourth quarter, O'Hara came up with their own eight points on a 9 yard touchdown caught by D. J. Griffin and a two point conversion by Raphael Spencer.

GIRLS TENNIS OPENS SEASON

Although Briana Rainey won her No. 1 Singles match 8-3 and teamed with Alex Moran, won the No. 1 Doubles 8-2, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Girls' Tennis Team was edged by Clinton 5-4 on Thursday, August 26th.

Coach Laura Eagle has six girls golfers to begin this season. Olivia Wright has already entered competition coming in 15th in the WARRENSBURG INVITATIONAL on August 23. _____ The other five on this year's team are Ciara Bazemore, Alyssa McKee, Ashley Jackson, Kylee Bosworth, and MacKenzie Magwire.

FOOTBALL JAMBOREE HALTED BY LIGHTNING

On August 20, O'Hara's football team got off five plays against Ruskin when the fields and stands were emptied as lightning ruled the day. _____ Raphael Spencer had two runs of 4 and 13 yards and Brett Coatney ran for 5 as the Celtics managed one first down. _____ Ruskin was to have the ball after O'Hara's 12 plays but the contest never got to that point.

Celtics Begin Football Season With Young Team

After completing the 2009 football season Third Place in State, the Archbishop O'Hara High School football team will be starting the new season with a very young squad, only eight of whom are seniors. ______ The first encounter is the Jamboree wherein the Celtics face Ruskin, University Academy, and Pleasant Hill (12 offensive plays, 12 defensive plays, and no specialities). _____ Junior Jake Fortin will start as the O'Hara quarterback and senior Raphael Spencer is returning to lead the team's running attack. _____ Brett Coatney, Jake Chichuk, Jorge Belcher, Andre Jordan, Josh Snow, Ronnie Jackson, Tanner Hull, and Ronnie Sailer are expected to make an impact. Seniors on the team include Alex Schnitz, Josh Bonello, Lowell Thomas, and Jimmy Clark.

O'HARA VOLLEYBALL TEAM IN MO/KAN INVITATIONAL

The Archbishop O'Hara High Schhol volleyball team will play in the WHITE pool of the Lee's Summit West High School 5th Annual Varsity Invitational on September 11th. _____ The other three teams in the pool are Blue Valley Northwest, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and Blue Springs South. _____ Lee's Summit West joins Saint Teresa's, Shawnee Mission East, and Blue Valley North in the NAVY pool while Lee's Summit will be with Lawrence Free State, Bishop Miege, and Lafayette/Ballwin in the BLUE pool. _____ The SILVER pool will consist of Raymore-Peculiar, Blue Valley, Blue Springs, and Saint James Academy.

O'Hara Varsity Football Schedule 2010

After playing in the pre-season Jamboree at Ruskin at 7 PM on August 20, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics visits Grandview on the 27th; game time 7 PM. _____ The next two Fridays, the Celtics host West Central Conference teams Clinton and Warrensburg. ____ Two away Conference games follow against Sedalia Smith-Cotton and Saint Pius X. _____ On October 1st, O'Hara hosts University Academy and on the following Friday, the Celtics travel to Center for a Conference game. _____The last three contests are District Games with Pembroke Hill away and Westport and Central at home.

O'Hara Mourns Death of Kevin Kimbrell

Father of nine children who have attended or are presently attending Archbishop O'Hara High School and Saint John Francis Regis Grade School, Kevin Kimbrell, 53, passed away on July 24 at Saint Joseph Medical Center. _____ Kevin was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 13671, an active member of Saint John Francis Regis Church, and a volunteer worker at Archbishop O'Hara High School. He was a self-employed painter. _____ Rosary was scheduled for 5 PM on Sunday, July 18 and funeral at 10 AM the following day, both at Saint John Francis Regis Church.

ALUMNI GOLF TOURNEY WINNERS

At the Shamrock Golf Course in Lee's Summit, the Archbishop O'Hara High School alumni had their annual golf tournament on June 18. ______ The team of Jon Hiesberger '87, Amy Russell Hiesberger '91, Mike L. Hiesberger, and Mike A. Hiesberger won the A Flight First Place. Second Place was taken by Mark Wernsman '93, Bryan Snyder, Lisa Snyder, and Chad Snyder. _____In Flight B, first place was composed of the team of Dennis Sweeny '80, Chris Sweeny '85, Tom Garth '87, and John O'Connor '88. Taking second place was the trio of Kim Beachner '84, Dave Brage, and Danny Banderas. ______ For Flight C, Jim Monteil '84, Paul Monteil, Bob Boland, and Mark Madsen won first place while Ryan McInerney '02, Jim Edinger, Kevin Page, and Art O'Connor came in second. _____ Brian LeSage and Jim DeMarea '73 were the top two putters in the Rita Monteil Challenge. ______ Finally the results of the other five contests were Paul Bookmeyer in the 50/50 on hole #6, Ron Slepitza with the longest putt for hole #18, Chuck Norris hitting the longest drive on hole #7, Fred Geer coming closest to the pin on hole #4, and Jon Hiesberger '87 having closest to the pin on hole #16.

STATE CHAMP SKYLER YOUNG IN SHOT PUT!

Improving each week, sophomore Skyler Young won the gold medal in the State Class 3 shot put on May 29th. ____ The Archbishop O'Hara High School athlete achieved the Championship with a distance of 41'4". _____ In the Sectionals, Young had a distance of 38'3.25" which was good enough for second place, and the previous week she took second in District with a 35'10" toss.

Football Metro Classic Kansas 26 Missouri 23

For the second year in a row, the margin in the score of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association Metro Classic was three points as Kansas won over Missouri 26-23. _____ Last year Missouri won 10-7. ______ At first it looked like Missouri would come out on top, building up a 15-0 advantage, until Kansas answered with a touchdown before halftime. _____ However Kansas continued to score until reaching a 26-15 lead. _____ A touchdown followed by a two-point conversion by Missouri ended the scoring of the day. _____ _____ From the 2009 Archbishop O'Hara High School football team, Ted Dujakovich, was an offensive lineman on the Missouri roster for the game played on Thursday, June 17 at Shawnee Mission North. _____ The O'Hara Celtics had taken third in State in their Class. _____ Dujakovich had the jersey number 78 and is headed for Blue River Community College in the Fall. _____ _____ The GKCFCA Metro Classic was established in 1991 with top seniors of Missouri playing their counterparts from Kansas. _____ The Missouri team also had one of their assistant coaches, Mike Edinger, from O'Hara's coaching staff.

Melissa Wiehn announced the nine young ladies that will be making up the 2010-2011 O'Hara Celtics Dance Team. _____ They are Ellen Balentine, Kaitlyn Vinck, Candace Miller, Cameo Miller, Amelia Ernstmann, Apryl Denzer, Whitney Allen, Briana Rainey, and Ashley M. Jackson. _____ Among other performances, the Dance Team provide halftime entertainment during the school's home football and basketball games.

THREE CELTICS ON ALL DISTRICT BASEBALL TEAM

Senior Aaron Mitchell was named to the Class 3 District 15 All District Baseball Team along with juniors Cullen Rowland and Sam Janet. _____ Mitchell was an infielder and occasionally pitched for the Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics. ______ Rowland and Janet were the pitcher and catcher combination for O'Hara. _____ A total of sixteen players were selected for All District honors. _____ O'Hara ended up in second place, losing an extra inning game to Pembroke Hill in the District Championship.

Two Archbishop O'Hara High School baseball players were named to the All West Central Conference First Team and four were selected for the Second Team. _____ Pitcher Cullen Rowland along with infielder Aaron Mitchell were First Team players from the 15-9 Celtic squad that came in second in the District. _____ Making the Second Team All Conference were shortstop Aaron Stubblefield, catcher Sam Janet, outfielder Jake Slocum, and secondbaseman Travis Peter.

Two Track Athletes From O'Hara Qualify For State

Cydnee Reese won the discus event in Sectionals Class 3 Section 4 at Kearney High School on May 22. Skyler Young placed second in the shot put, so both Celtics will compete next weekend for the State Titles. _____ Reese had a distance of 125'10" edging out her closest opponent who had 125'7". _____ Young's heave was 38'3.25" which was shy of the 40'4" winning thrust. _____ As a result of the two athletes' feats, O'Hara as a team tied Notre Dame de Sion for 16th place among the 27 schools that scored team points.

O'Hara Baseball Team is Second in District

Archbishop O'Hara High School won the Runner-Up plaque for the baseball Class 3 District 15 when they lost the Championship game in an extra inning 5-4 to Pembroke Hill on May 21. _____ O'Hara ended their season 13-9-2 and Pembroke Hill continues with a record of 11-9. _____Earlier in the day in the semifinal games, the Celtics had an easy 14-4 win over Lincoln Prep and Pembroke Hill eased past Harrisonville 7-0.

O'Hara Soccer Team is Second in District

Archbishop O'Hara High School won the Runner-Up plaque for the soccer Class 2 District 6 when they lost the Championship game 4-0 to Note Dame de Sion on May 20. ____ The loss brought O'Hara's record to 13-11 while Sion went to 16-3-2. _____ Oak Grove fell to the O'Hara soccer team 3-0 in the first round when Derrianna White was credited with yet another shutout for the season. _____ Katie Brage, Lindsay Beachner, and Andi Davis provided the necessary goals. _____ In the semi-final game, the Celtics outscored Pembroke Hill 6-4 with Taylor Eason and Sydney White each getting a pair of goals. _____ Mary Pat Brage and Kaylea Lancaster each had a goal to account for the margin of victory.

FOUR FROM O'HARA QUALIFY AT DISTRICT TRACK MEET

In the Class 3 District 7 Track meet, four athletes from Archbishop O'Hara High School were in the top four to qualify for continued competition in State. _____ Sklyer Young with a 35'10" shot put took second place as did Cydnee Reese with a 114,4" in the discus. _____ Qualifying with fourth places in their events were Jasper Greeson with a time of 51.43 in the 400 meter dash and Andy Meyer with a time of 4.51.43 in the 1600 meter race. _____ As a team, the O'Hara girls were 12th among 16 schools and the boys were 13th among 15 schools. Warrensburg was the the girls District Champs and Ruskin took the boys Championship. _____ Although not qualifying for further competition, the following girls scored team points for O'Hara: Dakota Waggerman 7th in pole vault and 8th in long jump, Claire Becker 8th in both the 1600 meter and the 3200 meter races, Rachel Gudde tied for 7th in the high jump, and taking 6th in the 4x100 meter relay team were Cydnee Reese, Marli Bartlett, Amiecea Johnson, and Nakeia Lewis. _____ Tanner Hull had a pole vault of 11 feet for 6th place and Brett Coatney was 7th in the 400 meter dash.

Commemorative Plaque For Tyler Fratzke

Between the time of the Archbishop O'Hara High Scool Baccalaureate and Commencement Exercises, a commemorative plaque for Tyler Fratzke was added to the school chapel. _____ Tyler died in an automobile accident on September 25 and would have graduated with the 2010 class on May 16. _____ Engraved on the plaque are the words of Abraham Lincoln, "It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years." _____ The plaque is the tenth one permanently mounted in the school's chapel. _____ Three of the plaques are in memory of teachers who died while employed at the school: Anna Hennon, Marvin Tucker, and Brother Austin Makowski. _____ Three plaques remember the tragic accident that took the lives of Gina Metoyer, Dianne Navratil, and Angela Lamb in 1984. _____ The remaining three are on behalf of Amy Furey '75, Michael McLaury '82, and Brian Teeman '83.

O'HARA 2010 COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES

On Friday May 14 and on Sunday May 16, the Archbishop O'Hara High School conducted the Baccalaureate Mass at Saint John Francis Regis Church and Graduation Ceremonies at the Pavilion at John Knox Village in Lee's Summit. _____ Jenna Mahlberg gave the Salutatorian talk at the Baccalaureate and Molly Gutteridge gave the Valedictorian speech at the Graduation. _____ Ninety-seven seniors participated in the ceremonies. _____ At the Baccalaureate, Brandon Wesche and Nicole Karwczyk were presented the Saint La Salle Award, Connor Duncan was announced the recipient of the Tyler Jones Scholarship, and recognition was given to the outstanding senior projects. The projects by Anthony High, Brandon Wesche, Molly Gutteridge, Logan Naudet, and Nick Cobb were among the top. _____ The Graduation Ceremonies began with a prayer offered by Jim Monteil who is this year's Lasallian Teacher of the Year. _____ Nicole Krawczyk sang the National Anthem a cappella. ____ The O'Hara Concert Choir under the direction of Gerald Snow sang Total Praise. _____ Among the Special Awards announced at this ceremony were the two O'Hara Elks Teens of the Year Anthony High and Lyndsey Lopez determined by the Grandview Lodge, and the Celtic Scholars who attained above a 4.00 GPA: Molly Gutteridge, Jenna Mahlberg, Brandon Wesche, Kara Feuerborn, and Katherin Huber. _____ Katherine Huber was also the O'Hara Scholar-Athlete from O'Hara. _____A special remembrance was made for Tyler Fratzke, a member of the class who died in an automobile accident during the year.

Three From O'Hara Faculty & Staff Honored

Although the ceremony scheduled for May 13th was cancelled, the Kansas City-Saint Joseph Diocese gave special recognition and sincere gratitude to three Archbishop O'Hara faculty & Staff members for twenty-five years of service to the Catholic Schools of the Diocese. ______ Larry Habel who served at both Saint Pius X High School and at O'Hara, along with Mike Martin and Brother Richard Geimer, both of whom served at O'Hara, completed their twenty-five years in the Spring of 2010.

Needing just one goal, goalkeeper Derrianna White was credited with another shutout as the Achbishop O'Hara High School soccer team defeated the Warriors 1-0 on a wet day on May 12. _____ Taylor Eason got the goal on a beautiful cross by Sydney White.

Jim Monteil Receives Lasallian Teacher of the Year Award

Jim Monteil, head of the Archbishop O'Hara High School mathematics department, has been name the O'Hara Lasallian Teacher of the Year. _____ Reflecting the educational and religious characteristics (the spirit of faith and of zeal) of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Patron of all teachers, Jim walks in the footsteps of his father Paul Monteil who not only taught history at O'Hara before retiring, but is an affiliated member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. ______ As head of the mathematics department, Jim has math teams represent O'Hara in math contests and sponsors an annual grade school math contest held at O'Hara every Spring. _____ Jim has been an assistant coach for the O'Hara football team working as the offensive co-ordinator. _____ His schoolwide prayers to start the schoolday have been very well received as sincere and meaningful.

MARK SCANLON NEW O'HARA BASKETBALL COACH

Mark Scanlon, a member of Our Lady of the Presentation parish in Lee's Summit, has been named the head basketball coach at Archbishop O'Hara High School for the 2010-2011 season. _____ He replaces Todd Magwire who is moving on to coach at Bishop Ward High School. _____ Graduating from Northwestern Missouri State University, Scanlon holds a Masters Degree in Physical Education from Ottawa University. _____ He is a member of the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame, received the Eddie Ryan Award and the Lambert Award, and has been named Metro Coach of the Year. _____ At Northeast High School, he coached Daylen Robinson who won the 2010 Direnna Award.

Mike Berney Named to the WCC Academic Team

Mike Berney, captain of the West Central Conference Championship Knowledge Bowl Team from Archbishop O'Hara High School, was named to the WCC All-Academic Team on May 12th. Along with other scholars on the Team, Berney has an ACT score above 32. He was the only senior on the winning O'Hara team this year, and last year was the only non-senior on the Team that was Runner-up. He also was a member of the Third Place team in the State District competition in April.

CAYWOOD SELECTED TO FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE GOLF

Jack Caywood was selected to the All-West Central Conference First Team in golf on May 11. _____ He has also qualified to compete as an individual in the Missouri State Meet. _____ In the West Central Conference, the O'Hara team placed fourth with 364 strokes from its four man team. _____ The top three teams were Warrensburg 325, Smith-Cotton 344, and Saint Pius 347. _____ Clinton was just two strokes below O'Hara at 366 and Center finished the day at 450.

Baseball: Celtics & Cardinals Split One-Run Games in Double Header

In two close baseball games played on May 11, O'Hara and Clinton split one-run decisions, the Celtics winning 2-1 after dropping a 7-6 extra inning game. _____ _____ Cullen Rowland pitched a four hit game in the O'Hara win, giving up a run in the last inning. _____ The Celtics got their first run in the first inning when Rowland singled, went to second on an error and to third on a passed ball, and scored on Jake Slocum's fielder's choice. _____ Aaron Mitchell scored the Celtics' second run in the 6th inning, hitting a double, stealing third, and coming across the place on Aaron Stubblefield's RBI single. _____ _____ In the first game of the double-header, O'Hara took a one run lead in the intial inning on a double by Aaron Stubblefield followed by an RBI single by Jake Slocum who was O'Hara's starting pitcher. _____ Slocum ran into trouble in the fourth inning giving up three walks and a single but yielding only one run before being relieved by Logan Halil who threw a strikeout with the bases loaded. _____ The Celtics retook the lead in their half of the inning on two walks and an RBI single by Cullen Rowland. _____ The Cardinals scored three runs off Halil in the next inning with the help of four hits and two errors. _____ The Celtics took the lead back in their half of the inning with three runs, tying the game on a 2 RBI double by Sam Janet and a go-ahead RBI single by Addison Schmitt. _____ Giving O'Hara a two run lead in the 6th inning, Cullen Rowland doubled and came home on an attempted pick-off play in which the ball went into center field. _____ Clinton tied up the contest with three singles in the 7th inning. _____ With Aaron Mitchell on the mound, the Cardinals coaxed a walk, and the runner was sacrificed to second. A scratch single put runners on the corners with one out. Twice a double steal was attempted, failing to advance runners the first time, but realizing the winning run the second time.

ANOTHER O'HARA SHUTOUT IN SOCCER

Derrianna White registered another shutout for the O'Hara soccer team 10-0 against the Center Yellowjackets on May 6. _____ As usual, Taylor Eason led the scoring attack putting in three goals, and freshman Sydney White added a pair. _____ Five individual goals were scored by Lindsay Beachner, Lindsey Hanaway, Katie Brage, Mary Pat Brage, and Andi Davis.

Three Celtics Win Firsts in WCC Track Event

In the track and field competition for the West Central Conference held at Center High School, three O'Hara athletes won first places. _____ Jasper Greeson with a time of 50.89 seconds won the 400 meter run, Skyler Young took the shot put with a 34'4" heave, and Cydnee Reese's 118'7" discus throw was the best distance in that event. _____Teamwise, the O'Hara boys were sixth and the girls were third. Warrensburg won top honors in both boys and girls competition.

O'HARA SEEDED #1 IN DISTRICT BASEBALL

In class 3 District 15, the O'Hara Celtics baseball team is seeded #1 among eight teams. _____ Pembroke Hill, Harrisonville, and Lincoln Prep have the next three seedings and the remaining schools in this District are East, Center, Ruskin, and Renaissance Academy. _____ On Saturday, May 15, the Celtics face Renaissance Academy at 10:00 AM while later in the day Lincoln Prep meets Ruskin, Pembroke Hill takes on East, and Center plays Harrisonville. _____ On Monday, May 17, the teams play elimination rounds with the District Championship scheduled for Tuesday, May 18 at 5 PM.

Celtics Lose a Close 5-4 Tennis Encounter with Saint Pius

In singles matches, the O'Hara varsity tennis team benefitted with wins by John Tyler, Joe Locasio, and Matt Falke in the 5-4 loss to Saint Pius. _____ Locasio was also a winner in doubles teaming up with Matt Shelton but it wasn't quite enough to carry the day. _____ Four O'Hara players scored wins in the JV competion; they were Curtis McNeill, Julian Gidley, Brandon Dennis, and Pat Berney.

CELTICS SPLIT A DOUBLE HEADER

After dropping a 5-7 decision to Warrensburg, the O'Hara baseball team won 10-3 on May 4th. _____ Aaron Mitchell, Sam Janet, and Jake Slocum each colledted three hits, but the big blast was a home run by Travis Peter. _____ With games being made up that were cancelled by rain and wet fields earlier in the season, the Celtics are playing daily and double headers putting a premium on pitchers. _____ In the O'Hara victory, Jake Slocum and Logan Halil combined pitching duties.

Jack Caywood State Qualifier in Golf

Jack Caywood shot an 81 in the Class 3 District 7 Golf Tournament to qualify as an individual for State competition even though the Archbishop O'Hara High School team tied for third in the District. _____ The Team from Pembroke Hill had a score of 313 to win the District title. _____ Harrisonville was the runner-up team with a score of 350 while both O'Hara and Pleasant Hill had 353. _____There were eleven schools competing in the District Tournament held at Adams Pointe Golf Course. _____ O'Hara outscored Clinton, Oak Grove, Grain Valley, Odessa, Nevada, Ruskin, and Center.

Dakota Waggerman broke the girls school pole vault record at O'Hara by 12 inches at the Joe Falcon Relays with a 8'6" jump. ______At the meet, Jasper Greeson set a personal best in the 300 meter run. _____ Event champions included Sydnee Reese and Skyler Young. _____ Scoring team points with personal bests were Andy Meyer, Tanner Hull, Brett Coatney, and Claire Becker.

Celtics Win a One-Hitter in Baseball

On April 27, the Archbishop O'Hara High School baseball team won 7-0 in a non-Conference game with Benton High School bringing their record to 11-4. _____ Cullen Rowland pitched hitless ball until allowing a two-out double in the last inning. _____ O'Hara scored three runs in the third inning and tagged on four more in the sixth. _____ Two walks to start the third inning were followed by a double by Cullen Rowland and a single by Aaron Stubblefield to account for the first two tallies of the game. Another run came across the plate on a misplayed pickoff attempt at second base. _____ Travis Peter and Jake Slocum opened the sixth inning with consecutive singles. _____ Following a sacrifice bunt by Logan Halil and a fielder's choice, Ben Janet reached first base on an error and two runs scored. _____ Hits by Aaron Mitchel and Cullen Rowland produced the final two O'Hara runs. _____ Rowland struck out four batters, walked none, and allowed only two base runners, one of which reached first on an error.

ANOTHER SOCCER SHUTOUT FOR CELTICS

Once again, Derrianna White was credited with a soccer shutout as the O'Hara Lady Celtics won 8-0 with a game with the Clinton Cardinals on April 26. _____ Half of O'Hara's goals were by Taylor Eason. _____ Single shots by Katie Brage, Sydney White, Lindasy Beachner, and Andi Davis accounted for the rest of the scoring.

Saint Elizabeth Outpoints Nativity and Saint Regis in Math Contest at O'Hara

Seven elementary schools competed in the annual Archbishop O'Hara High School Math Contest on April 23rd with Saint Elizabeth scoring 567 points to 553 for Nativity and 490 for Saint Regis. _____ The team scores for the schools were based on the totals of the top two students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. _____ In individual awards, the top 8th graders were Ben Kirse from Saint Regis and Heather Cigas from Saint Elizabeth who tied with scores of 108 apiece. _____ Saint Peter's Liam Bryson was the top 7th grade scholar with a 109 score and the top 6th grader with 110 points was Maggie Mannebach. _____ In addition to the first place winners, ribbons were awarded to the next four in each grade with seven 6th and 7th graders from Saint Peter's leading the list. _____ They were Daniel Stanley, John Leisman, Conor Law, Samantha Smith, Patrick Bauman, Maggie Hutchison, and Nick Hirner. _____ Brett Kies from Saint Regis and Nick McCracken from Nativity also won ribbons for being in the top five in their classes.

O'HARA BASEBALL TEAM TAKES SECOND PLACE IN TOURNAMENT POOL PLAY

The final standings in the MID SEASON CLASSIC 2010 EASTERN JACKSON COUNTY VARSITY BASEBALL TOURNAMENT has the O'Hara Celtics in second place in Pool A competition with Lee's Summit taking first. ______ Lee's Summit was undefeated in four games and the Celtics went 3-1. _____ Raytown South, William Chrisman, and Fort Osage had identical 1-3 records to tie for third. _____ Lee's Summit West and Truman tied for first in Pool B with 3-1 records. _____ In third place was Lee's Summit North at 2-2, and tying for fourth were Raytown and Lee's Summit Community Christian School, both with 1-3 records. _____ Extreme rain prevented playoffs this year.

St Pius Falls to O'Hara Twice by One Point

On April 21st, the Saint Pius Warriors came up short by one point in golf and in soccer to the O'Hara Celtics. _____ The 162-163 golf score had a medalist for both teams, Jack Caywood for the Celtics and Joe Tyner for the Warriors, both carding 38 on a par 36 course at Hodge Park. ____ On the same day, the O'Hara soccer team benefitted from goals by Taylor Eason and Andi Davis for a 2-1 win.

DERRIANNA WHITE GETS A SHUTOUT FOR O'HARA SOCCER

Christ Prep fell to the O'Hara soccer team 4-0 as Derriana White registered another shutout. _____ Sydney White scored a goal for the Celtics and Taylor Eason accounted for the other three.
