Hosting Smith-Cotton, Center, and Saint Mary's, the Archbishop O'Hara High School wrestlers fared well on January 17th. It was senior night and the last opportunity to wrestler at a home meet this year. The six seniors on this year's team were Eero Johnson, Peyton Franklin, Tyler Adams, Jeremy Ambrose, Ethan Ambrose, and Nick Schofield.
Saint Mary's only won one match in losing 66-6 to the Celtics.
The competition with Smith-Cotton was much more challenging. Stephen Conway put O'Hara ahead with a first period pin and the Tigers tied the team score with an open bout.
Tim Tinsley went into overtime in his match having completed three periods tied at 9-9 but after several overtime periods lost 13-12 putting the Tigers ahead 9-6.
Senior Eero Johnson's pin in 15 seconds put O'Hara on top 12-9, and a first period pin by A. J. Garcia made the lead 18-9.
O'Hara dropped the next four matches to fall behind 26-18.
Then the Celtics won three in a row: a pin by senior Peyton Franklin, a technical fall 17-0 by Gerard Harker, and a cradle pin by Maverick Griffin.
With two matches remaining, O'Hara was ahead 35-26.
Spencer Mathews lost a 9-5 decision and Eric Gossman registered a pin with six seconds left in the first period to guarantee the Celtic team win. Final score was 41-29.
The Center Yellowjackets lost to the Celtics 54-28, but enjoyed being ahead until the eighth match. While going up 22-18, Center gave up pins to A. J. Garcia and Tanner Warner.
Except for six points in the final match when O'Hara left the weight class open, the Yellowjackets did not gain another point.
Meanwhile the Celtics had pins from Sly Newman, Maverick Griffin, Spencer Mathews, and Stephen Conway.
