Second Place in District 14 Class 3 MSHSAA Academic Competition
Mike Berney and Max Storms made the All-Tournament Team at the Class 3, District 14 Academic Bowl on April 18th as Archbishop O'Hara High School took second place.
Holden was the District champs defeating O'Hara 310 to 175 in the championship round; O'Hara had won their competition with Holden in the preliminary rounds.
In fact only O'Hara and Knob Noster were undefeated in the preliminary rounds with 3-0 records in which all six District schools competed.
After O'Hara won 210-180 over Holden, they went on to post winning scores of 260-110 over Oak Grove and 260-95 over Pleasant Hill to get the top seed in the semifinal games.
Although Knob Noster and O'Hara had identical 3-0 recoreds, O'Hara won the tiebreaker on points for the top seeding. O'Hara had a total of 730 points and Knob Noster had 660.
Holden was seeded 3rd and beat 2nd seeded Knob Noster in the semifinals to earn the right to reach the finals.
O'Hara had an easier time in their semifinal game facing Pleasant Hill who had the fourth best showing; O'Hara won 255-80 to vault them into the championship game.
O'Hara's team consisted of Joe Volz and Andy Meyer in addition to Max Storms and Mike Berney. Joe Volz almost made the all-tournament team but was just a small margin behind the sixth selection.
In the first round preliminaries, Holden went ahead of O'Hara by ten points 60-40 in the first quarter but the two teams were tied at 120 apiece at halftime.
By the end of the third quarter the teams were knotted at 130-130, but in the fourth quarter O'Hara pulled ahead by outscoring Holden 60-30.
Odessa was the sixth team in the District competition but like Oak Grove did not make it past the preliminaries and Pembroke Hill did not field a team at all.
The event was held at Pleasant Hill High School.
Mike Berney is a junior and Andy Meyer is a sophomore and will be back next season. However both Joe Volz and Max Storms are seniors.
Brother Richard Geimer is the moderator of the O'Hara Knowledge Bowl team.
