The Archbishop O'Hara High School Celtics football team won their first West Central Conference game of the 2014 season by handing the Clinton Cardinals a 44-6 loss. O'Hara's record increased to 3-0, and they have outscored their opponents 124-50.
Two very short runs by Michael Briggs and Gerard Harker opened the evening's scoring, and the Celtics cashed in on a 73 yard pass play from Michael Briggs to Michael Rowe in the first quarter. O'Hara had a lead of 21-0.
The only points of the second quarter were by Gerard Harker on an eight yard run along with Zach Drakes's extra point to make the halftime score 28-0.
Zach Drake scored in the third quarter on a 30 yard pass and Austin Evans added a long 58 yard TD run. The Celtic defense did their part with a two-point safety by Maverick Griffin while Carter Halil and Derek Jordan each accounted for two quarterback sacks.
As the game closed, the Cardinals scored six points on a pass play from Jacob Goucher to Haydon Wilson, but no extra point was attempted.
The Celtics entered the game ranked 8th in 3A State competition after winning the game with Oak Grove who were ranked 9th. Maryville was ranked #1, followed by John Burroughs, Blair Oaks, California, Mountain Grove, Park Hill Central, and Ava.
As for 3A District 7, only Odessa and O'Hara have 3-0 records. Others in that District are Hogan Prep (2-0), Oak Grove (2-1), K C Central (1-1), Southwest Early (1-2), Clinton (0-3) and Pembroke Hill (0-3.
As for the West Central Conference, with four games having been played, O'Hara, Center, Saint Pius X and Smith-Cotton have 1-0 records, Warrensburg and Clinton are 0-1, and Nevada is 0-2.
