O'HARA WRESTLERS WIN BIG ON SENIOR NIGHT

On January 12th, the O'Hara Celtic wrestling team ran their season record to 6-2 for the year with an impressive 54-16 win over the Butler Bears. _____ Captain Miles Womack started the dual meet by going up a weight class and winning with a pin. _____ Nick Schofield won on forfeit as did Stephen Conway. _____ Senior Josh Snow battled for the full six minutes but came up a little short. ______ Ben Kirse won a 3-2 match against a tough opponent. ______Freshman Nihkil Fenani had a pin in the third period increasing the Celtic lead. _____ Ian Levy fought well but for the second night in a row ran up against the opponents' best wrestler and fell short. _____ Tanner Warner received a forfeit and Tyler Adams lost in a well wrestled match. _____ Senior Jake Fortin came up big in his last home match with a first period fall. He has shown great determination after suffering a major knee reconstruction last year. _____ Freshman Maverick Griffin won a hard fought 4-2 decision over a solid opponent. _____ Freshman Spencer Mathews continued a great freshman season by pinning his opponent. _____ The dual meet ended with junior Peyton Franklin, also wrestling up a weight class and earning another pin for the Celtics. ______ Coach Kevin Stanley had the following comment, "It was a great night for the team and especially the seniors. I enjoyed our get together at the end and hope there are many more nights like this to come. I would like to thank all the seniors and their families for the hard work and support they have given the team." _____ _____ _____ _____On Saturday the wrestlers had another good day at a tournament at Center. _____ Nine Celtic wrestlers signed up for the event and came home with five medals: one gold, two silvers and two bronze. _____ Ethan Ambrose battled to a 2-3 record but lost a 3-1 match. _____ Jake Fortin took second place for the day running his record to 13-3. _____ Maverick Griffin also placed second with a 4-1 record on the day. Both Jake and Maverick lost to a State Finalist in overtime and by 1 point. _____ Peyton Franklin increased his record to 21-8 with a dominant performance winning his bracket and he did not get extended to the second period all day finishing with a 5-0 record._____ Miles Womack earned a bronze medal with a 4-1 showing. _____ Robert Martin in his first tournament placed third and had just one slip up that cost him the gold. _____ Ben Kirse, Stephen Conway and Josh Snow also competed in this event.

Lady Celtics Lose by Eight After Leading by Seven

The Archbishop O'Hara High School girls basketball team lost to Savannah 45-37 on January 11. _______ They fell behind 7-0 at the start of the game but managed to fight back to a seven point advantage early in the third quarter at 29-22. ______ At the end of the first quarter the Celtics were down 15-11 but pulled ahead 26-22 by the half. _____ Up to this time, 13 of O'Hara's 26 points were scored by Amanda Hull and 9 of Savannah's 22 points were three-pointers. _____ Unfortunately the Celtics were held to just one basket in the third quarter and three baskets in the final quarter. _____ Amanda Hull ended the game with a total of 15 points and the second top scorer was Alexa Williams with eight points._____ ______ The junior varsity team fared better. _____ Trailing by a single point 22-21 at the begining of the fourth quarter Peyton Podschwit scored seven points and Rachel Ryan added two while the defense held the visitors to a harmless basket to finish the game in the win column for O'Hara 30-22. _____ For the Celtics, Podschwit had 13 and Rachel Ryan had 11.

CELTIC WRESTLERS HAVE 5-2 RECORD IN DUAL MEETS

On January 10, the Archbishop O'Hara High School wrestling team split dual meets. _____ A big win against 15th ranked Savannah by a score of 51-27 was followed by a 52-30 loss to Benton, another team ranked in the top twenty in State. _____ In the first meet, senior Miles Womack won a tough 3-1 match that pretty much sealed the victory. _____ Eric Gossman, Peyton Franklin and Stephen Conway had pins in their matches too. _____ ______ Peyton Franklin and Stephen Conway won with pins against Benton, and senior Jake Fortin wrestled well picking up a fall. _____ Finally Ben Kirse got back to .500 with a quick pin in the heavyweight division. ____ The Celtics are 5-2 for the year.

HURTT SCORES 25 IN O'HARA LOSS

Even though Daniel Hurtt scored 25 points for the Archbishop O'Hara High School basketball team in the Celtics' game with the Oak Grove Panthers on January 9, the team came up ten points short in the 71-61 contest. _____ He was supported by outside shooting by Kyle Baker's four three-pointers and Maquille Gatlin's three, but it was not enough to catch up. ______ Baker ended up with a total of 20 and Gatlin had 12. ______ For the Panthers, Eric Gant scored 26 followed by Jordan Douglas with 16. ______ ______ On the same day, the Lady Celtics came from behind to win 36-29 against the Holden Eagles. ______ The team trailed into the fourth quarter when the defense made itself known to the tune of 13-0. _____ Kaylee Kephart with 19 total points led all scorers but got all her points within the first three quarters of the game. _____ For the winning Celtics' squad, Cydnee Reese, Madison Williams, Alexa Williams, Amanda Hull, and Kellie Bachkora spread out the points evenly

O'Hara 36 Rockhurst 55 in Boy's Basketball

The Archbishop O'Hara High School boys basketball team dropped a 55-36 decision to Rockhurst on January 6. ______ Kyle Wolf, the only Hawklet to reach double figures, had nearly half of Rockhurst's points with 26, while two Celtics were in double figures: Daniel Hurtt 18 and Kyle Baker 11.

O'HARA WRESTLERS IMPROVE TO 4-1

Behind the winning matches of Miles Womack, Ben Kirse, Peyton Franklin, Gerard Harker, and Spencer Matthews along with open weight/forfiets, the Archbishop O'Hara High School wrestling team won 75-3 over Saint Mary's on January 5th. _____ In dual meets, the Celtics improved their season record to 4-1.

Lady Celtics Begin New Year with Win

The Archbishop O'Hara High School girls basketball team won a West Central Conference game with the Center Yellowjackets on January 4 by a score of 54-41. _____ Getting most of her points in the second and third quarters, Cydnee Reese led the O'Hara attack with a game total of 19. _____ Although Corey Lovelace matched Reese's total for Center, the Celtics received double figures from Amanda Hull (15) and Alexa Williams (10). _____ After the Celtics jumped to a quick 6-0 start, the Yellowjackets caught fire to take a 13-10 lead into the second quarter. ______ In the second quarter, O'Hara scored the first seven points and held a 23-18 score at the halfway mark. _____ Center surged with a 12-2 production within the third quarter and picked up a one-point advantage at 30-29. _____ But the Celtics scored the last seven points in that quarter to take the lead for good. ______ O'Hara outpointed Center 16-9 in the fourth quarter of the game.
