CLINTON RALLIES TO A 26-14 VICTORY OVER O’HARA
The Archbishop O’Hara High School Celtics football team was ahead 14-13 after three quarters in their game with the Clinton Cardinals but could not hang on to the slim lead and fell 26-14 on September 21.
It was the first West Central Conference football game played this season and O’Hara’s overall record dipped to 2-3.
Clinton received the opening kickoff and scored in twelve plays, one of which was a fourth down gamble. Chris Sidfrid had the touchdown run for 7 yards and Brian McCoy kicked the extra point.
O’Hara was unable to reach midfield on their first possession and Michael Briggs punted to the 22 yard line.
A long breakaway run for 70 yards by Chris Sidfrid advanced the ball to the Celtic 13 yard line, and a few plays later, Sam Ahnamen-Cover plunged for the Cardinal’s second TD. An attempt for a two-point conversion failed and O’Hara was down 13-0.
Clinton was kept scoreless for the next two quarters while the Celtics managed to move into the lead.
Starting from deep in their own territory on the 7 yard line, the Celtics worked their way up to the 21 yard line and were forced to punt. The punt returner mishandled the ball on the 43 yard line and Reilly Sweeney recovered for O’Hara.
Ronnie Sailer and Brock Hughes alternated carries to bring the ball up to the 13 yard line. O’Hara scored on a pass from Michael Briggs to Hondo Pearcy, and Zach Drake’s kick made the score 13-6 for halftime.
During the halftime ceremonies, Matt Patterson from the class of 2002 was inducted in to the Lettermen’s Hall of Fame. He is O’Hara’s all-time rusher in yards with 5,396 yards, averaging 9.8 yards per carry, and scoring 346 points in his four years.
Also inducted was Dennis Roehl in the Special Recognition category for his 30 years as the team’s football statistician.
Early in the third quarter, Brock Hughes broke loose for a 51 yard touchdown run, and Zach Drake put O’Hara on top 14-13. In O’Hara’s five games this season, Drake has not missed an extra point kick except for the one that was blocked earlier in the year.
The Celtics maintained the lead into the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals cashed in on a 24 yard run by Chris Sidfrid to pull ahead by five points 19-14.
With 8 seconds remaining in the game Clinton scored again, this time on a short run by Sidfrid which was followed by McCoy’s extra point.
