STUDENT SCHOLAR

Max Storms, valedictorian for the 2009 class of Archbishop O'Hara High School and holder of a good number of cross country and track school records, was selected as the Scholar-Athlete from the school. He was captain of the cross country team, the track team, and the Academic Knowledge Bowl team in his senior year. On a scale of 4.0, he has the top rank among a class of 86 with a 4.5 grade point average. Among his accomplishments, Max was a National Council of English Teachers' Essay winner. He attended Missouri Boys State and plans to attend the Universtiy of Missouri. He was a member of the Student Council, the robotics team, and had one of the top senior projects for the year. Max is the son of Mike and Mary Pat Storms. Mike is an alumnus of O'Hara who excelled in his years at the school in cross country and track. Also nominated as the 2009 Scholar-Athlete was Joe Pepple who was a member of the Celtics' football and basketball teams and had a high grade point average.

District Track 2009

The O'Hara Track Team had three qualifiers in District competition on May 16th. Kayla McGee won the silver medal in the triple jump at 34'7", and bronze medals in the 100 meter hurdles at 16.36 and in the long jump at 15'6". Max Storms took two silver medals in the mile run timed at 4:30.85 and the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:49.39. Paulina Pengelley was a bronze medal winner in the discuswith a toss of 105 feet. The top three schools in the boys' competition were Ruskin, Harrisonville, and Warrenburg and the top three schools in the girls' competition were Warrensburg, Ruskin, and Pleasant Hill. The O'Hara boys team came in 11th out of 14 schools and the girls team were 9th among 15 schools.

BACCALAUREATE ON MAY 15TH

On the traditional feast day of Saint John Baptist De La Salle, Patron of all Teachers, the Archbishop O'Hara High School Baccalaureate Mass took place at Saint John Francis Regis Church at a 6 PM ceremony. Reverend Thomas J. Holder, Pastor of the church and an O'Hara alumnus, was the Presider at the liturgy. He addressed the seniors and their parents & friends with the theme of Act Justly, Love Tenderly, and Walk Humbly as he focused in on the stress that comes with coping with senior projects, homeworks, and college anticipation. Two awards were presented at the ceremony. The Tyler Jones Scholarship which has been annually announced for the past eleven years was won by Alicia Bertrand, and the annual Saint Ls Salle Award was given to Joseph Pepple. Thirteen senior projects were singled out for special recognition. Four were given SUPERIOR rating accomplished by Allison Seiler, Chance Norton, Kimberly Jones, and Alicia Bertrand. Nine had EXCELLENT ratings by Megan Billings, Jong-Gu Chae, Lindsey Davis, Elizabeth Ford, Elisabeth Lowe, Rebecca McInerny, Madeline Rembold, Maximilian Storms, and Lauren Twyman. The Salutaorian of the class, Kim Jones, made her presentation on the past four years of the class progress. The valedictorian, Max Storms, was introduced and his speech is a part of Sunday's graduation ceremony.

How O'Hara Did in WCC Track Championships

MAX STORMS IS TRIPLE WINNER AT WCC In the West Central Conference Championships on May 8th, Max Storms from Archbishop O'Hara High School won the 3200 meter, the 1600 meter, and the 800 meter runs. His time in the first was 10:21.47, in the second 4:32.67 and in the third 2:02.17. He also ran a leg of the 4x400 meter relay team that came in third place along with Jasper Greeson, Brett Coatney, and Jim Clark. The O'Hara 4x100 meter relay team took second place with Raphael Spencer joining Greeson, Coatney, and Clark. Raphael Spencer added a bronze medal for the long jump and Tanner Hull had the bronze for the pole vault. --------------------------------------------- In the girls competition, Gold medals were won by Skyler Young in the shot put and Kayla McGee in the long jump. Young's winning shot was 33'4.75" nd McGee's distance was 16'9". Kayla McGee won two silver medals in the triple jump and in the 100 meter hurdles. Bronze mdeal winners for O'Hara were earned by Paulina Pengelley in the discus, Dakota Waggerman in the long jump, Hailey Houser in the high jump, and Paige Bush in the 400 meter dash. Warrensburg won theboys' Conference Title with 174 points, followed by Smith-Cotton 145.5, Center 80.5, O'Hara 59.5, Center 55, and Saint Pius X 40. They also won the girls' division with 140 points, followed by Smith-Cotton 100.5, Center 98, Clinton 83.5, O'Hara 73, and Saint Pius X 43.

NEW O'HARA NHS OFFICERS

Nicole Krawczyk is the new 2009-2010 National Honor Society president at Archbishop O'Hara High School. Lyndsey Lopez will serve as the vice-president and Jenna Mahlberg as the secretary. Brandon Wesche was elected treasurer and Erin Lynch the junior representative.

Celtics Add Two Conference Wins in Baseball

The Archbishop O'Hara baseball team won a conference game 4-1 over the Warresnburg Tigers on May 5th. This was O'Hara's second win against Warrensburg this season. Cullen Rowland pitched the entire game for the win. Joey Tucker had three hits in the game along with two RBI's. Aaron Mitchell had two hits and Jared Ginter got on base base three times with one hit and two walks. ------------------------- On the following day, Smtih-Cotton fell to the Celtics 2-1. Sam Janet's high hopper in the sixth inning when the bases were loaded scored the deciding run. Aaron Stubblefield was the winner of the pitchers' duel giving up only three hits. Chuck Preston got O'Hara's earlier RBI. Alex Gaul-Pearson had some great defensive plays in the game. It was the Celtics' fourth Conference game of the season. The junior varsity won a slugfest 10-9 with Drew Fennesy contributing three hits for O'Hara

WCC ACADEMIC ALL CONFERENCE

The All Academics Team for the West Central Conference included the following O’Hara students. Making the First Team All Conference Academic Team were Max Storms, Kim Jones, and Joe Pepple. All three had ACT scores of over 31. The Archbishop O'Hara Academic Knowledge Bowl took second place in the West Central Conference. The other varsity members were Trevor Krasowsky, Lindsey Davis, Mike Lynch, Joe Volz, and Mike Berney.
